πŸ‡³πŸ‡± The Dutch forum πŸ‡³πŸ‡±πŸ§‘ Everyday life and customs

The Dutch forum should now also be Belgium where they speak Dutch!! πŸ˜› Do you like Antwerpen @Piwipete? πŸ™‚ I think it is a very nice city!!

Question for the members of this forum (but @Fleurke and @-Kiki- please dont tell the answer): who knows the name of the part of Belgium where they speak Dutch? πŸ˜›

Simple ! It’s the Flanders region 😎

Would you try kroketten @Etienne, @Pennarossa2024, @Simone724, @Sabri_KC and @Lianshen? πŸ˜› And do you expect them to taste nice or horrible? πŸ™‚

I think the kroketten that @Fleurke make are a LOTTTT less fatty than in the store like FEBO. But it is very Dutch.

Sure, actually it looks very good and tasty to me πŸ˜‹

Very good @Sabri_KC!! In English it is called Flanders but in Dutch Vlaanderen. πŸ™‚

That is very nice if you try it @Simone724! But you have kroketten with minced beef and like @Piwipete said also with shrimps. Or you can try both!! πŸ˜›

Fun fact

And a news fact: on this day in 2010 the Netherlands Antilles were stopped. I wrote more about it in this forum: https://penpal-gate.net/forum/13-anything-and-everything/9809-what-happened-today#new_post Most islands become separate countries or municipals of The Netherlands and all are now still of the Kingdom of The Netherlands.

I think you mean croquettes, and as long as it's not the ones for pets, yep, but maybe the dutch version is not as appetizing as the ones I have in mind?

Yes I think that is the right word, BUTTT the Dutch croquettes are different from what I see on google from other countries. This is nice to see in English about Dutch croquettes (fun facts): https://www.the-low-countries.com/article/ten-fun-facts-about-the-dutch-croquette/#:~:text=The%20%27kroket%27%20(croquette),or%20even%20a%20vegetarian%20version.

Dutch alphabet

Hello everybody! πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ For the next lesson @Sabri_KC asked how the letters of the Dutch alphabet (in Dutch we say the same but write alfabet) are pronounced.

For a good start it is best to watch this video in Dutch for small children. The reason i choose that video is that the whole alphabet is pronounced and every time you also hear a Dutch word to give an example with a real word how that the letter is said in a correct way! πŸ™‚

BUTTTT i give some extra tips:

1️⃣ Above I put a video of how small children learn the alphabet. I think that is better because it is more like how you say those letters in Dutch words. But if you go to school and adults they say the alphabet a bit different. This video shows how to say the alphabet for adults: click here

2️⃣ You should know that some letters if you combine them they sound different like "aa" and "ee" and "ie" and "ou" and "ei". I found a youtube video and they are called vowel combinations. You can see it here here

3️⃣ What is not said yet in the video is another important rule. If you have a vowel and after it one consonant + more letters the vowel is often said like the same letter but as combination. So for example:

- Lepel (spoon): the first "e" is said like "ee"

- Praten (to speak): the first "a" is said like "aa"

How to say "ee" and "aa" you can see in the video with vowel combinations (see 1).

4️⃣ There is a special video about how to say the "G" and the "R" because that is very difficult for people from other countries! πŸ˜› You can see that video here Our Dutch teacher said a funny story one time that we had passwords in the second world war that the German soldiers could not say without an accent. And the Dutch fighters used that! πŸ™‚ But I am not sure if that was also with a G and a R but i can ask it to my teacher if anybody wants that. Btw the video is in Dutch but with good English subtitles. And the video is made for foreign persons.

5️⃣ To practice again everything from above you can watch these: video 1 and video 2 and video 3

I hope that all these videos will help you if you want to learn Dutch. πŸ™‚ Just let me know below or @-Kiki- or @Fleurke if you have questions about it.

Now an assignment for everybody:

How do you think that Dutch sounds if you hear it? Does it sound like "grfstkrgrnmnrktsrrrff" or different? Some family in China say it sounds as if people are fighting if we speak Dutch because it sounds harsh and that you need to drink water every second to be able to say the words!! πŸ˜› πŸ˜ƒ

Dutch and Danish

I was going to say Niels Bohr but I just realized he's Danish 😭, by the way do Danish and Dutch share any similarities or are they entirely different languages?

@Etienne for you and also others I think this video is interesting!!! Make sure to watch at least 3:50 minutes! I was like huhhhhh??!! πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

@Etienne thats true the language frence and italiaans and portugees and arabic are more music in the words hihi

German is typing...

Weirdly enough I like German, but Dutch/Arabic/Chinese πŸ˜΅πŸ˜‚. I'm not sure I would like French either if it was foreign to me πŸ€”

I actually also think Dutch is not the most pretty language and is difficult too, but it is my home language. And i think most Dutch people can speak English! πŸ˜›

Huhhh how can you like German but not Dutch because is very similar! πŸ˜› I think I like Italian and French from the sound the most of all languages.

Hello everybody!! πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

Today there are two important news stories about Dutch things. I wrote it here: https://penpal-gate.net/forum/13-anything-and-everything/9809-what-happened-today/8#new_post

Tomorrow I will write a little bit about the 80 years war and find some nice information about it for you. And it is also maybe nice to know some things about Dutch microscopist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek who was born today in 1642. And I saw online that he became the first to observe bacteria and protozoans. (I dont know what protozoans means but i will try to find it out for you!) πŸ˜› There is now a hospital in the Netherlands that has his name too!! πŸ™‚

I looked about the 80 years War between Spain and The Netherlands and I found this super cool soundtrack of the Dutch movie Kenau: click here

The movie is about a mom Kenau and she lives in the city Haarlem and she helps to fight against Spain which tries to capture Haarlem. But they dont get a lot of help because the Dutch soldiers try to also help the city Alkmaar so they have to save Haarlem alone. 😬

I hope that people who listen to the soundtrack like it!! I like the song a lot!! πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

Hello everybody! πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

Today is in The Netherlands a very important day because small children celebrate...

St. Maarten!!

Who knows what this means and what is the tradition? πŸ™‚ And if you know it, do you also celebrate it in your country?
