Dutch alphabet
Hello everybody! πββοΈ For the next lesson @Sabri_KC asked how the letters of the Dutch alphabet (in Dutch we say the same but write alfabet) are pronounced.
For a good start it is best to watch this video in Dutch for small children. The reason i choose that video is that the whole alphabet is pronounced and every time you also hear a Dutch word to give an example with a real word how that the letter is said in a correct way! π
BUTTTT i give some extra tips:
1οΈβ£ Above I put a video of how small children learn the alphabet. I think that is better because it is more like how you say those letters in Dutch words. But if you go to school and adults they say the alphabet a bit different. This video shows how to say the alphabet for adults: click here
2οΈβ£ You should know that some letters if you combine them they sound different like "aa" and "ee" and "ie" and "ou" and "ei". I found a youtube video and they are called vowel combinations. You can see it here here
3οΈβ£ What is not said yet in the video is another important rule. If you have a vowel and after it one consonant + more letters the vowel is often said like the same letter but as combination. So for example:
- Lepel (spoon): the first "e" is said like "ee"
- Praten (to speak): the first "a" is said like "aa"
How to say "ee" and "aa" you can see in the video with vowel combinations (see 1).
4οΈβ£ There is a special video about how to say the "G" and the "R" because that is very difficult for people from other countries! π You can see that video here Our Dutch teacher said a funny story one time that we had passwords in the second world war that the German soldiers could not say without an accent. And the Dutch fighters used that! π But I am not sure if that was also with a G and a R but i can ask it to my teacher if anybody wants that. Btw the video is in Dutch but with good English subtitles. And the video is made for foreign persons.
5οΈβ£ To practice again everything from above you can watch these: video 1 and video 2 and video 3
I hope that all these videos will help you if you want to learn Dutch. π Just let me know below or @-Kiki- or @Fleurke if you have questions about it.
Now an assignment for everybody:
How do you think that Dutch sounds if you hear it? Does it sound like "grfstkrgrnmnrktsrrrff" or different? Some family in China say it sounds as if people are fighting if we speak Dutch because it sounds harsh and that you need to drink water every second to be able to say the words!! π π
Dutch and Danish
I was going to say Niels Bohr but I just realized he's Danish π, by the way do Danish and Dutch share any similarities or are they entirely different languages?
@Etienne for you and also others I think this video is interesting!!! Make sure to watch at least 3:50 minutes! I was like huhhhhh??!! π π
