This is a poem from Farid al-Din Attar, an Iranian Sufi
from the city of Nishapur. It talks about how the attitude of a God's lover
should be.
O heart, if you are truly in love, seek the Beloved.
Stand at the heart's door, day and night, awaiting the Friend.
Your Beloved is always present at the door of your heart.
Open the gate of your heart, and remain present and awake.
So that the eye of the soul may behold His face unveiled,
Turn your face toward the wall in longing for His countenance.
(An image of devotion and withdrawal from worldly distractions.)
The realm of the heart has been overtaken by the
clamorous army of the ego.
Therefore, if you are a lover, be a vigilant one.
No one knows when the Beloved will reveal His beauty.
Yet be ever prepared for that moment.
On His path, offer all that you possess—your heart and
your soul.
Live for the One alone, and turn away from all else.
If your heart and soul long for everlasting life,
Speak little, embrace self-annihilation, and keep company with Attar.
