πŸ•°οΈπŸŒž What happened today? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ€“ Anything and everything

1️⃣ On this day in 1886 U.S. President Grover Cleveland officially dedicated the Statue of Liberty πŸ—½- a gift from the people of France πŸ’™πŸ€β€οΈ to the people of the United States - on Bedloe's (later Liberty) Island in Upper New York Bay. Did you know that the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France @Etienne, @Sabri_KC and @Lianshen?? I had no idea about that!! πŸ™„πŸ™„ It can be a Trivia question later!! πŸ˜›
Like it has been said already, I think it is a common knowledge in France and we even have many replicas of it everywhere. For instance, there is one close to my city.

Maybe something that is less popular is that it took years to first build before being shipped to the US. In the US, it was also stored more than a year before being assembled.

Thank you very much @Lianshen!! I did not know that at all also the second thing what you wrote!! πŸ™‚ I like writing this forum a lot every day because i learn a lot and I hope others maybe too!! πŸ˜›

Today is 29 October and this happened today in the past:

1️⃣ The Republic of Turkey was established on 29 October 1923, largely through the efforts of Kemal AtatΓΌrk, who is considered the country's founder and served as its first president. πŸ‘‘πŸ‘‘πŸ₯³

2️⃣ It was announced on 29 October 2015 that China was ending its one-child policy; beginning in 2016, couples could have two children. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

3️⃣ On this day in 1929 was the collapse of U.S. stock market prices. πŸ’ΈπŸ’ΈπŸͺ™πŸ’° Just five days after nearly 13 million shares of U.S. stock were sold in one day in 1929, an additional 16 million shares were sold this day, called β€œBlack Tuesday”, further fuelling the crisis known as the Great Depression. πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

4️⃣ Israel's army attacked Egypt in the Sinai Peninsula in a fight for control of the Suez Canal area on this day in 1956. βš”οΈ πŸ™

5️⃣ Anarchist Leon Czolgosz was executed for the assassination of U.S. President William McKinley on this day in 1901. Also on the same day in 1618 British adventurer and writer Sir Walter Raleigh was executed for treason. I looked up online and found this about the last person I mentioned and what happened: https://www.history.com/topics/exploration/walter-raleigh πŸ“πŸ‘‘πŸ₯€

6️⃣ Hurricane Mitch made landfall, hitting northern Honduras; one of the deadliest Atlantic hurricanes on record, it caused some 11,000 deaths in Central America. This happened on 29 October 1998 and so the hurricane was also called October Monster. 🌎πŸŒͺ️😒 Here is more about Hurricane Mitch: https://www.history.com/topics/natural-disasters-and-environment/hurricane-mitch

7️⃣ These people were born on this day: American actress Fanny Brice (1891), old president of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (1938), American actor Richard Dreyfuss (1947) and old president of Turkey Abdullah GΓΌl (1950). πŸ°πŸŽ‚πŸŽŠπŸŽ€ @diogenes_cask and @Esma-Nur do you know if people in Turkey liked Abdullah GΓΌl as the president? πŸ™„πŸ™„

On Wednesday we get family from outside The Netherlands that come to visit us until Sunday evening so I will be offline almost all the time from Wednesday afternoon until Sunday evening. Because we will visit places in The Netherlands and if they want maybe also in Belgium and perhaps in France or Germany. So if anybody wants to write daily updates on those days anybody can of course do that in this forum. Or if not I can of course write again after Sunday!! πŸ™‚ 😊😊

Welcome to belgium @Yue I always think that's so bad about the one-child family in China. I once saw a report about that. and many children were kidnapped at the time

I found this about the first topic mentioned above in today's list. It is about the person who created Turkey: https://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/ataturk_kemal.shtml Maybe it is interesting to read about it. πŸ™‚

Thank you very much @Lianshen!! I did not know that at all also the second thing what you wrote!! πŸ™‚ I like writing this forum a lot every day because i learn a lot and I hope others maybe too!! πŸ˜›
It's my pleasure, and there is indeed a lot to learn. I also discover new events through your thread πŸ™‚

This one is very interesting as it is full of drama and twists. I would not write much about this one here, and I am sure that someone like @diogenes_cask has more accurate iinformations than me. Nevertheless, France, UK and US are all involved in a way or another in this war, which is much more important than we often believe to understand today's world.

Indeed, Suez Crisis was a major event in history and it has turned all the balance of forces upside down. Israeli forces occupied the Sinai, a sparsely-populated desert region in Egypt, halting their advance only 10 miles from the eastern side of the canal. It was not a remarkable advence at all but Britain has paid the largest political bill for the impacts of "Operation Musketeer". Under intense pressure, particularly from the US, troops were rapidly withdrawn and replaced by a UN force. Its outcome highlighted Britain’s declining status and confirmed it as a β€˜second tier’ world power. From then on, US has became the 'first one' in the global stage. Domestically it caused a massive political fallout in Britain and resulted in an economic crisis. Britain saw Suez Crisis as a threat to its economic interests and prestige, US saw it as potential increasement of Soviet influence over Egypt. Soviets saw it as an opportunity to have a political impact in Middle East. As always, politics in Middle East was kind of a Gordian Knot.
