Hi there,

is there anyone else who thinks that it would be helpful
if the five questions together can be answered in 1 minute?
There are some questions I can answer in 5 seconds and
for some I need almost 20 seconds to understand the questions
or the answers. English is not my mother language.
So if you can answer a question in five seconds you have 15
seconds more for the others.

I just joined the game and I like to learn.
When I don`t know the answers I research a little afterwards.

Thank you
Christine

P.S. Sorry but I was mistaken.
A minute has 60 and not 100 minutes, so
you have 12 seconds for an answer not 20 seconds.

I believe so. I tried to process the answer, but the time is already up. I have been trying continuously for 4 to 5 days, and it still didn’t work out.

I can understand your frustration at having to first translate the question if English isn’t your first language, but without the short time allowed to answer it would be possible to google the answers quickly and get them all right, then nobody learns anything unfortunately.

I agree with all of you, although the mostly with LateLearner. English is a foreign language for most of us, but it's widely used international language and almost everybody understands at least a bit. Actually I think it's better in long term for us that we need to think faster because of translation.

I understand what you're pointing out here but looking at it from another angle, if the timer were any longer, it would give people just enough time to quickly open another tab and look up the answers online. And where is the fun in that?☺️ Since it's a general knowledge game, the short time keeps everyone honest and tests what you actually know off the top of your head. Maybe a simpler, more direct phrasing in the questions can be used so that language barrier doesn't slow anyone down?

Respectfully, Sir! Not everyone whose mother tongue is not English needs to translate into their own language. Some of us have completed our education in English, so we don’t require translators. But let me be clear, I am not Wikipedia. I don’t think I am so naive as to take a game that seriously, check answers on Google, and pretend that’s fun. What I do need is time to process and understand. For example, certain topics like oak trees or some areas of history that weren’t part of my education require me to think more carefully. I suggest that, instead of being dismissive, you respect everyone’s opinions without throwing assumptions at others.

I can't say I completely agree with you. Though, it's a robot and I never learn from a robot. People (incl. my family and I) often complain about, for example, AI, that they tell complete bullshit, and make a complete mess out of the websites. Every robot has that. So I actually complain about, that the Trivia Sessions ce on on penpal gate anyway. About the five seconds thing: I think you should have atleast 10 seconds.

I don’t mean to sound dismissive or throw assumptions around. Nobody else has said that to me. You sound very upset or insulted, but I’m only trying to be realistic and reasonable. Sorry if I offended you AEGP.

That’s ok, you don’t have to agree with me completely 😄. I enjoy the trivia quiz because it challenges my memory, and for someone my age it’s healthy to retain as much as possible. I try to remember the things I didn’t already know. 👍

Everyone has some good points here. I’m not sure if my opinion would hold much weight on this topic, as English is my first language, and I don’t have trouble with the existing time limit on these questions. However, I can see it from the other perspective as well, as English is not my only language. I definitely could not do 5 seconds in my secondary languages.

That being said, I do not mind a longer time limit for these questions. Yes, it does open up an opportunity to cheat, but there’s definitely easier ways to cheat as well. So, if someone wanted to cheat, they would figure out a way to do so.

For me, I am trying to take the environment into account. This is a penpal website, not a trivia, social media, or gaming site. None of us came here for trivia, but it’s a fun little thing to get us to login every day. So I think it’s safe to say that no one came here just to dominate in the trivia forum. We all just do it for fun. Additionally, the leaderboard each week is varied enough that I don’t think cheating is an issue here.

So, for what it is worth, I am all for making it accessible to everyone as much as possible.

verywell said @Aschei 💪
