@Fleurke says: October 17 is World Day for Resistance to Poverty.

@Fleurke says: October 17 is World Day for Resistance to Poverty.
My little sister secretary @Esma- Nur hhhh may daylimiet started

Today is 17 October and this happened in the past:

1️⃣ Mother Teresa won the Nobel Prize on 17 October 1979. Here you can read about her and why she won the prize: https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/1979/teresa/biographical/

2️⃣ Like @Esma-Nur already said above today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This was because of a protest at the Trocadéro in Paris where on 17 October 1987 people demonstrated that extreme poverty is against the human rights. I looked that up and here you can read about that news: https://www.unesco.org/en/days/poverty-eradication I saw online that the Trocadéro is a square, but maybe @Etienne, @Lianshen and @Sabri_KC know why they chose that square for the protesting?

3️⃣ German classical music composer Johann Sebastian Bach married his cousin Maria Barbara Bach on this day in 1707. Would you marry your cousin if that was possible? 🙄🙄

4️⃣ Marijuana became legal in Canada for recreational use in 2018. In my country it is the same if you are older than 18 years. It is a bit strange because in The Netherlands it is illegal but the police does not do anything if you are older than 18 and if it is for yourself. I can look it up if anybody wants to know it or do you perhaps know more about it @-Kiki- or @-Unknown-? On the streets there are often people who smoke that and it smells REALLY BAD!!!! Like old socks you put on fire!! And for people that are older than 18 there are coffeeshops. Do you maybe know @Miss_Penpal if that is the same in Canada?

5️⃣ On this day were born rapper Eminem (1972), astraunat Mae Jemison (1956) and actress Rita Hayworth (1918). Does anybody here like Eminem or Rita Hayworth?

I would NOT marry my cousin CAUSE THEY ARE ALL MY BROTHERS!

I'm not quite sure, but the switch from IV to V in Republic is essentially changing the Constitution, hence the "regime" or way France is governed. 5th Republic thus is a Republic made for De Gaulle in 1958 like mentionned earlier, but what it changes in France is mainly giving more power to the President and ministers (Prime Minister being their leader) as well as relative "stability" etc.

No that’s correct !

What do you do at university to study this kind of things?

Well I study law so yeah that kinda makes sense 😂

I'm not so fan of the Revolution. I actually consider it as one of the biggest scam of history/French history 😅
That being said, the first Republic starts after the Revolution (I think they kept Absolute monarchy for a few years, switched to Constitutional monarchy which was turned into a Republic after the "betrayal" of Louis XVI) until Napoléon took the power. It's worth to note that Napoléon was also ruling under the first Republic as the first consul (during the Consulate).
After Napoléon, France got the "Restauration", where the Moanrchy was instaured back with Louis XVIII. The second Republic "starts" (and end) with Napoléon III 😉

It's true that the first Republic is a little bit special though, as there was no president at that time, and especially not at the begining.

I agree with you. A lot of people died for no specific reason during the French Revolution. I mean, I’m glad that we have more freedom and rights than under the Monarchy, but the royal family and a lot of people were really mistreated.

Our teacher said that you can just say that someone was against the revolution and they would just get that person and put him in the guillotine without any way that he can fight against that. That is really bad because it has nothing to do about crimes, but you can just say that someone said something and that is enough. And I am against the guillotine. 🙄🙄

Often times I go to the Trocadéro square 😀 There’s a gorgeous and lovely view of the Eiffel Tower and other surrounding buildings ! The protests are quite rare, but it’s quite an emblematic square since the Eiffel Tower is right in front of it, so it’s a symbolic place where people want to protest.

Yes exactly. That’s why the period after the French Revolution is often referred as "La grande terreur" (the great terror). First period in 1792, and second period in 1793-1794, during those two periods, every person that was supporting the monarchy, or only suspected to, was/could be executed. Robespierre is a politician who took part in the revolution, but he also contributed to that period, so bad that he ended up being executed as well…..

Robespierre was a criminal

Robespierre was a criminal
I don’t like him neither. I don’t understand why his name was given to some streets or bus stops. @Lianshen do you know more about this or can you correct me about some mistakes I would have said about Robespierre ?

In Amsterdam it is De Dam square where you can protest. And of course in The Hague there are places and other cities.

I know that he was also put under the guillotine because people hated him right that he executed so many people and everybody was only afraid and angry at him. So it is strange that they name streets of him. I dont understand that.

There’s also something sad that happened today on 17th October 1961 : There was a massacre of Algerians during the Algerian war, and some Algerians who were peacefully protesting in Paris, and the police brutally repressed the protest, throwing some protesters in the Seine River.

Sorry for this bad news but this really is a duty of remembrance for everyone and for me as a French/Algerian.

Thank you very much @Sabri_KC for sharing that. Yes I agree that any important news that happened in the past on this day you can mention it in this forum. So merci beaucoup!! 🙏🙏

I found what @Sabri_KC mentioned about what happened in Paris. Here is the news about it: https://webdoc.france24.com/october-17-1961-massacre-algerians-paris-france-police-history/

Today is 18 October and this happened in the past:

1️⃣ On this day in 1898 Puerto Rico become from the United States after the Spanish-American War. And also on this day in 1867 the American flag was flown to Sitka because America bought Alaska from Russia. I was surprised about this news because I did not know that Alaska was from Russia before!! 🙄🙄

2️⃣ The West Side Story was a musical film and it was for the first time in the American cinemas on this day in 1961. Did anybody see that movie or musical?? 📺📽️🎞️

3️⃣ Today in 2007 the old prime minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto returned to her home country and hours later she was ALMOST killed when her car and others were bombed in Karachi. In December she was murdered. I looked online for news and also old photos and I found this: https://achievement.org/achiever/benazir-bhutto/

4️⃣ These people have birthdays today: the old prime minister of Canada: Pierre Elliott Trudeau (1919), the person who maybe killed JFK: Lee Harvey Oswald (1939) and American musician: Chuck Berry (1926). 🍰🎂🎊🎀

Today is 19 October and this happened in the past:

1️⃣ It said online that on 19 October 2003 Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa, who had won the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her charity work. Does anybody know what beatified means? Does it mean she is made holy? 🙄🙄

2️⃣ On this day in 1812, Napoleon began retreating from Russia after he lost fighting against them.😬

3️⃣ I also found that on 19 October 1781, Britain's Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, handing a huge victory to American General George Washington and effectively ending the American Revolution and assuring America's independence. 🕰️🔍

Does anybody have other news that happened on this day in the past? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
