Short Mountain Bike Ride -- A Sand Journey

Over the past week, much to the chagrin of my few friends,
I’ve been a bit out of touch — on Penpal-Gate. Well, every
now and then I get swept up in a burst of energy. Is it old
age, the feeling 'running-out-of-time', or....

Resolve and Decisions should be tailored to the opportunities
available. My body is still quite fit, so over the last few days, in
temperatures of 30°C and above, I cycled down the mountain,
enjoyed the lake, and then cycled back up again.

Ayda is one of the few friends I’ve so far had the pleasure of
getting to know ‘only’ here online. This forum is dedicated
especially to her, though not exclusively.

I love sand and as a Diving Fan and Teacher for Apnoe, I had
a lot of opportunities to collect samples from all over the world.
Each sand has its own story to tell and the way I come to it is,
of course, another story entirely. This is one of those stories....

Lake Constance is huge. I stared my Diving Carrier in it.
2007 I finished my first Scuba-Exam. Its behavior is more
like that of an ocean and in the summer it is pitch black
when you go down a few metres. The shores are quite
different.North-West we find sand easy. Those shores
in Swiss Side are almost all stone. Between Bregenz
and Lindau we find shell and 'sand' made out of it.

Dear Michael,

Actually, I am the one who is indeed pleased to know you, and I hope one day I can meet you in person, as well.

I am honored that someone like YOU dedicated the forum to me.

Thanks to you, I myself tried this Sand Collecting by venturing on an unknown path illuminated by your LIGHT, and could FEEL how Amazing and Enriching it was.

THANK YOU

WHAT is SAND?

In geology and in everyday language, sand is primarily defined by
its grain size -- particles between 0.063 and 2 millimetres -- rather
than by the material itself. As shell fragments too can be ground
down to this degree of fineness, they also fall into this category.

To me, sands are comparable to theatre and movies. Actors are
people and have their own lives. In their profession, they then
slip into completely different roles and characters.

In this picture every grain of sand has its own, very ancient history.
The way in which I come across a grain of sand and learn about it
is then a completely different story.

Of course, it is not possible to discuss every detail and aspect
intellectually. This is the same in every story — particularly
between people. But it also often explains why we feel drawn
to something or someone — EVEN THOUGH we know virtually
nothing about the 'Subject-in-Question'.

"It is often a mystery WHY we love someone or something. "

If you like to collect as many sands as possible, you have to finde
a 'system' to store it and there is need for some kind of Data-Bank.
I realised that with help from a friend, in 10 ml glass-containers
and an Access-Data-Bank.

LOVE and SAND

If I may write my story...

Studying and teaching about "sand" in pedology, I used to see it as lifeless particles gathering together to make a soft path to walk on along the shore, an environment to support some plants' roots, or a component of buildings and other structures.

But the "perception" changed the day it became alive as a messenger of love. The day someone changed its meaning to me and showed its value and the lessons it can teach.

The way you go to collect it, the instruments you carry with you, the geographical location you record, the way you come back with the sense of success and happiness... all are not only wonderful teachers but also reasons that you feel you have done something valuable in your life...

Now it is not just a lifeless particle to me. Whenever I hear the word "sand", whenever I walk on it, whenever I touch it, whenever I see a sand collection... a massive sense of life and love envelops me; I can see that lovely smile on the face of it, and hear the beautiful musical tone of the voice that was never heard...

If I may write my story....

OH, YOU MAY, AYDA...! 🙂

Collecting Sand has gave me an excuse to travel and
confront myself with Beauty and Fear. Live on Earth
is often -- TO FIND THAT REASON (to live for)

Collecting Sand in the Yew Forest

Yesterday Michael invited me to a little retreat.
He sent me to Peterzell,
home to the largest surviving yew forest in Europe.

One of the lessons I learned was, that when I really open up,
my teacher is always with me.
In the yew forest, it was easy for me to open up.
I was immersed in an atmosphere that was so primal,
mysterious, magical, and above all, quiet.
I associate all of that with Michael as well.

I collected sand from three spots.
The forest is very damp and crisscrossed by streams.
The calcareous tufa crumbled into sand just from
being rubbed lightly between my hands.
I couldn’t resist taking off my shoes and wandering
barefoot through the forest for a bit—to feel even more a part of nature.
I know that yew is poisonous in all its parts, and that caution is advised
in the presence of such a dense concentration of these spirit-like trees.
But… in the end, I couldn’t even resist taking a small sip from the streams.

I have to admit that I can’t fully understand what
Michael associates with collecting sand.
But when I look at his collection, the essence
of the nature it represents is very much present.
All the places he’s traveled to, contained in a beautiful drawer box.
And I know only a tiny fraction of the stories behind them.

All the more reason for me to hope
that I’ve contributed a worthy story to it.
For me, it was a mix of joy and learning.

Thank you
Christine

I will put some pictures of the yew trees on my profile
