I would not consider The Netherlands as a serious contender for the title - as applies to the vast majority of Dutch soccer fans. Goal scoring capacity is proper against weaker opponents, but may not suffice when facing the likes of Spain and France. But tournaments tend to be unpredictable to a certain extent. Hopefully Italy can qualify and strengthen the squad.

I have to admit that I did not watch a single match this last CL round. The western and middle part of The Netherlands is in hibernation with a school holiday. Daytime priorities have shifted from life in the office to some time exclusively allocated to our two daughters (often extending into the evenings with some fun activities of their choosing).

The stadium in Deventer is the smallest in the Europa league. Families estranged from any significant titles cheering for their local club in old fashion. Taking the 2-1 win across the finish line - and this outcome being well deserved! - is reminiscent of old sentiment being both alive and fruitful!

That seems to make sense Paolo. The Premier League and a handful of teams from La Liga are likely to dominate European football in the years to come. Some rare gems - PSG last year and Bayern M. this year - are part of the European elite.
How are Italy (Paolo) and Germany (last commentator) progressing in the qualifiers for the World Cup? We had a 1-1 draw this evening against Poland (only saw snippets of the game).

What you wrote about foreigners in national teams - that is not just an italian problem. On the other hand, we have so many migrants why shouldn`t they play for the country they live in? As long as they play good.....

Italia annientata dalla Norvegia che anche io non credevo fosse così forte, a parte che avremmo dovuto vincere con 9 gol di scarto, praticamente impossibile, questa è la nazionale italiana piu scarsa di sempre, ora ci saranno i playoff ma anche se dovessimo qualificarci per i mondiali, che ci andiamo a fare?

Mi sa che l'Italia che non si qualificherà ai Mondiali nemmeno quest'anno, ma probabilmente è meglio così, altre squadre lo meritano sicuramente più di noi e noi siamo una squadra ridicola. L'ho detto e lo ripeto, se una volta la nostra ambizione era quella di vincere i Mondiali, ormai siamo ridotti a sperare di qualificarci come unico obiettivo.

Ciao @Wolkenpaule sadly we are used to another kind of Italy national football team, the players of this Italy don't even deserve to be compared to the great players of the past, but also the misters and the entire system have their faults. I'm pretty sure we won't qualify to this World Cup again, it's sad to say, but we are not a good team at all, and other teams deserve it more than us.

It seems that a line up of top notch players does not suffice to guarantee success. In the beginning of the season the general assumption was that Liverpool would dominate the Premier League with signings such as Isak, Wirtz and Ekitike. But their collapse in both the UK and CL is spectacular.
Paolo & Simone: considering relative weak opposition in the play offs, Italy does actually have a good chance to secure their ticket. However, it would land Italy in Pot 4 (meaning it will face firm opposition of Pots 1 and 2 - and I believe Normay was currently placed in Pot 3). I would be surprised if Italy will manage to survive any given group in the initial stages of the competition. It’s a sour prediction Paolo and Simone.
Wolkenpaule: even in the absence of individual errors, Arsenal seems a major contender for CL this year - although their main focus will likely be the Premier League. They may meet again somewhere further towards the q/s-finals.
@Savi2024 In my opinion, we can maybe win over Northern Ireland if we're lucky enough... but Wales, if we will find them, will easily beat us, also considering that we will be away, against them; however, if we qualify for some miracle -considering that nowadays this is probably our real goal (and not winning the World Cup, like we were used to hope for, in the past)- we will be eliminated at the group stage for sure, no matter which teams we will find. Anyway, i think it would be a great result for us, considering the current team we have and what happened in the last World Cups... and trust me, it's really sad to admit that.
