I think there is no standard answer for your question. To select a gift for someone, what you need to know is her preference. Take myself as an example. Most Chinese girls my age like cosmetics and jewelry. But I'm not interested in that. I like model airplanes and postcards. I like facy things like ornaments, flowering plants (not cut flowers), chocolates and perfumes. I mostly prefer simple things. Receiving expensive gifts from someone is not a good idea. If that person is your sibling, parent or husband or anyother relative it is ok. But if it is from someone like friend or boyfriend should not accept it. If you accept a gift keep in mind you have to give something has a same value.
