Periods are countries which are not located in space but in time. I'm fed up with commercial music from the 80s, cause we allways hear theme in some radios or parties. I still think they can be good, but please stop washing our brains, let's listen to them just sometimes. But I like Iron Maiden, Mœtleï Crûe, Helloween, Blind Guardians or even Queen. In movies, I like Back to the future, Terminator, Star wars (even if the episode IV is from 1977, year of punk music) and even Conan the barbarian, even if I prefer the original short stories written by Robert Ervin Howard at the begining of the 30s. The RPG Dungeons and Dragons comes from this time. The comics Ninja Turtles started in 1984. There was also mangas like Cat's eyes, Akira, Jojo Bizarre Adventure, Hokuto no ken (Fist of the North Star or Ken le survivant for French people and Ken il guerriero in Italian and sorry by the way if I write it badly), Saint Seiya (Knights of Zodiaque), Dragon ball, City hunter (Nicky Larson in several countries), Captain Ssubasa (Olive et Tom in French and Captain Majide in Arabian), Berserk (rest in pees), toylines like Transformers, Bravestarr (space western), M.A.S.K. Gobots, The Visionaries, Thundercats (Cosmocats in France), Dino Riders, Jem and the Ologrammes and The Masters of The Universe. Those toylines, adapted in cartoons, grew up and now, we can use those universes with more adult stories. Lots of video games as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest come from the 80s. The Japanese Metal Heroes too! They inspired Robocop and a few of them was used by Saban Entertainment (Power Rangers) to create V.R. Troopers and Beetleborgs. A few animated series: Thundar the Barbarian (Arok le barbare in French), Blackstar and in Japan Shurato and Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Les samouraïs de l'éternel in French).
I'm from the 90s. The begining of rap music out of the USA, of psychedellic ellectro music, TV series like X files, Highlander, Hercules, Xena, Buffy, Stargate SG1 (yes, the first episode was broadcasted in 97 and Roland Emrich's movie is from 94), The Adventures of the young Indiana Jones and Power Rangers (even if the original Japanese Super Sentai started in 1975), Disney animated movies like The Lion King, movies like The Mask, comics like Savage Dragon, animes like Nadia and the secret of the Blue Water or Evangelion, Mangas as Detective Conan, HYuyu Akusho, Hunter X Hunter and obviously One Piece which continues nowadays, and even occidental animated series like Sophie and Virginie or The Tweens of Destiny in France and the DC Animated Universe (especially Batman of 1992 with Kevin Conroy voicing the heroe and Mark Hamill voicing the Joker, Superman from 1997 and Batman Beyond from 1999, because Justice League, Static Choc, Zeta Project and Justice League Unlimited are from the begining of the 2000s so it isn't the subject), Skeleton Warriors, the Marvel animated series (for example X men 1992, Spiderman 1994 and Hulk 1996), Spawn and Gargoyles for America.
I was a child in the 90s cause I'm from 93, but I grew up in the 2000s which are good too. Even the 10s and the actual decade have good things. We should all try not to be old bastards, saying "it was better in my time" or just "it was better before", cause like I said earlier, periods are countries not located in space but in time. And every country has it's own culture, in space or in time.
I don't think the world was "americanazed" and "acultured" in the 90s. Now, we can exchange as we do now in the Internet, so we can know other cultures. Japan is also influent thanks to the pop culture, and Arabic and African countries are influent because of music.
