Does a person's religion affect you being friends with them?

That's a question I'm very curious about. Because I am a Turk and my country is Muslim. The prejudice against Muslims around the world is very clear. But I find matters of religion absurd. If I was born in Europe and not Turkey, I would be a Christian, if I was born in India, I would be a Hindu. Religion is geography. The land where I was born has been Muslim for centuries, and these are my history, my past, my culture. I'm not a Muslim, but I have taken care of my values and will continue to date. Because religion is a culture, religion is history. Maybe in the future there will be no religion, and if it doesn't, will these prejudices end? I am very curious
Good question. I think that one needs to have knowledge about other religions to respect their beliefs and not accidentally offend someone.
I have found through many interactions both online and face to face that I do interact with people of different religions differently and trends within religions do emerge. It is hard to explain why but for me it isn't that I dislike any religion, I respect all religions.
All in all I feel that religion affects the friendship, making friendships different. Life would be boring if all friendships were the same, so that is a good thing. For me religion doesn't mean that I can't be friends with someone, and when it comes to the ability to make friends, it shouldn't interfere.
Yes definitely.I am a scientism and atheist. I respect all religions but I still prefer making friends with atheists( preferably scientism.) Because I think conflicts are usually more easily to be created between people who have different religions. There, let me tell you guys a story. I don't mean to judge anyone, I just state the fact. There was a Chinese international student studied in an American university. His roommate was a Christian. His Christian roommate prayed every night. His nightly prayers were loud and bothered the Chinese student. The Chinese student is an atheist. So the Chinese student consulted with his roommate and asked him not to pray at night. But the Christian roommate ignored his request because he felt he had the right to pray at night. The Chinese student didn't understand, so he moved out angrily.
If I were the Chinese student in that story, I would move out too.
I find the premis that religion is a matter of geography interesting. There are many areas (geographically) where several faiths co-exist. People can also change faith as a matter of conviction, how would that affect your central premis that faith is an accident of geography?
Dear Grisgotik, religion is not geography! For exemple: Todays Turkey was christian till 1453! Then the muslimic ottomans have killed and slaved the christians! The history of christian Hungary is full off muslim violence! The history of Austria too! 1530 and 1863 the muslims have tried to conquered Vienna, the heart of the Holy Roman Empire! So is wrong to say: Religion ist geography! Religion is the concept of power and struggle in the name of a think that they called "god"!

Because if you're born into a Christian family, your parents will raise you as a Christian.Or, if you are born into a Muslim family, you will be raised as a Muslim, and your family will educate you accordingly. There are people who research themselves and belong to a religion or choose irreligion, but according to social pressure, they are rare people, which is what I think
It depends on the person and their way of being religious. I dont want to listen to any prayers and hear how awesome god is all day.
When they can act like a normal human being and dont base their whole existance on being religious, which luckily applies to most people I know, I dont see why being religious should be a problem.
As long as Im not in contact with this religious-side all the time, its not an issue.
Well um, I don’t think religion has an effect on friendships, and from the viewpoint of my own religion, I can tell you that in Islam interfaith friendships are promoted.
However we are told that we should not befriend those who attack us because of our beliefs, regardless of who they are or what their religion is, and we should not force religion on someone.
We are all humans, right? So personal beliefs should not affect our own innate humanity.
And I don’t think religion is culture or geography because culture is often mistaken for religion, and in terms of geography, I’ll give you a personal example. I am ethnically Kashmiri, and in Kashmir there are Buddhists, Taoists, Muslims and Sikhs. Yes, Islam is the main religion, however it varies from region to region, so religion cannot be linked to geography in that case.
As long as we respect each other's religion, we can be friends for a long time.
That's why I have many christian, muslim and buddhist friends, and even a jew friend. I also have atheist friends.
St.Benedict said: The Lord is Transendent. And I know Imisspelled this one..😉🙂 pls correct me. But you get the picture, right,? The Lord is one. Us are many. To me he appear as Christian. To a Muslim The Lord is Mohammed. To a Hindu The Lord is a Budda. To s non believer The Lord comes as a Tree. Or,music. Or a poem.
My point IS: we have got to believe in SOMETHING!! Without Faith we can't survive. The great Dalai Lama said: My religion is simple. My religion is Kindness.
Think about it!
For me religion does not matter if you're a really cool person it doesn't matter what you believe in as your not mean or rude. I'm a very open person and I accept people for who they are and it doesn't matter what your background is and how you live your life, that's your choice and your life, not mine.
It does not affect anything until they try to sell their product. Since I'm an adamant atheist, I'm not a buyer. I can always say "thank you" and walk away.

I’m sorry, I do not mean to offend you, but you said that we as Muslims acknowledge Muhammad PBUH as our Lord; that is incorrect, and if a Muslim ever said that, it would be considered the biggest sin for Muslims to commit - Shirk. Allah is our Lord/God. But yes, I agree with most of what you have said. 😊
