@Mindy1213 Okay, so just a quick heads up, if your name in Chinese is Mingyue 明月, in Vietnamese it would be "Minh Nguyệt". And I see that you live in Shanghai, in Vietnamese that city is called "Thượng Hải". What is your last name? If I can translate it then now you could have Vietnamese name then 😁
@Yue_ In Vietnam, this is vice versa, "Hằng" is more common than "Nguyệt". Just from my old yearbook, my high school did not have any "Nguyệt" when I was there, but "Hằng", there's a lot students with that name.
And about relation between Chinese and Vietnamese language. Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary (words that have origin from China, but are reading in Vietnamese way) actually is about 30% to 40% of entire Vietnamese vocabulary. And a lot of things, we actually have Sino-Vietnamese word and purely Vietnamese word (the words that Vietnamese people created, not borrowing from any other countries) to say about that same thing. For example, the moon, "Nguyệt" is Sino-Vietnamese word, but Vietnamese do have their own word for it "trăng". Normally in daily use, we just say "trăng", but if we use "Nguyệt" for naming a child, or we may use "nguyệt" for literature and poem (just may, we could just use "trăng" and it's perfectly fine). Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary is considered to be more formal, so we may use it for special cases like that.
I could give you some more example. The first word is Chinese character, second is Sino-Vietnamese word, the third word is purely Vietnamese word, last one is English meaning.
人 - Nhân - Người - People
三 - Tam - Ba - Three
火 - Hỏa - Lửa - Fire
And also about Vietnamese alphabet which is written in Latin now. The current Vietnamese alphabet did not existed until 17th century, and even so, it's not perfected until 20th century. If you know about Vietnamese history, Vietnam once was under China's rule for around 1000 years, so during that time we mainly used the Chinese characters, but reading in Vietnamese way, like the Japanese use kanji nowadays. I also have to say that before we were under China's rule starting in 111 BC, ancient Vietnamese did not have their own writing system, so the Chinese characters was actually the first one. Then after gaining independence in 10th century, Vietnamese people did create have their own writing system, called "Chữ Nôm". The problem with "Chữ Nôm" is, it's even more complicated than Chinese characters. For example, the moon, in Chinese characters it's "月", in Chữ Nôm it's "𣎞". I mean seriously, I have no clue why did our ancestors think making a written system that is more complicated than Chinese characters is a good idea.
Then in 17th century, merchants and missionaries from Europe wants to trade and spread Christianity in Vietnam, and they created the writing system based on Latin alphabet. After 1945 when we gained independence (again, this time from France), the new goverment kept the Latin alphabet for Vietnamese language as it is easier to use, and more useful to fight against illiteracy amongst Vietnamese (which was around 95% at that time).
Thank u very much Tú @vtt3613 for writing that and i did not know it at all like that!!! I thought bc how u say words with sounds it is REALLYYY different than Mandarin bc if people speak Vietnamese i normally dont understand it at all. But is also bc Vietnamese people speak super fast!!!!!!!! 😛 😛
But the sounds are really different and i dont think u have tones??? We have tones and is super important to understand really what other person says to u. But i thought in Vietnamese it is not the same. So there are also lot of other differences and not just sound and grammar and also tones and how u write. BUTTT my grandmom who lives in Nanjing she said that Chinese and Vietnamese people are also like brothers and sisters from the history how Vietnamese people came to Vietnam. But im not really sure what she means with it but she said we are more close than for example with Thai people or from Myamar or other places. But i can ask my mom what she meant bc now she cant really explain clearly bc she has dementia but she said it several times!!!!
