Hate to make a mundane post about this, but can someone tell me what some differences between Finnish and Estonians .. in my travels to both countries (and I spent a lot of time in Estonia, as i lived Latvia for awhile) the languages seen mutually intelligible, but there has to be some difference..

Sooooo what are those differences?

Modificato da Based_Aura .

Estonians I don't know, because actually I don't have any Estonian friends, but Finnish people are in my opinion idiots.

Disclaimer: please note that the opinions expressed by Vaca are his own and not necessarily the opinions or beliefs of the creator of this forum 🙂.

I've been friends with 2 Finns. Friendships ended when 1 found out I find blaming RU for wars nonsense, and the other found out I do not support the LGBTQ+ community.

Everyone has their own opinions and I do my best to try to respect those differences. For my part. No more brother wars and how people live their lives isn't my concern.

Growing up in the SE USA.. people tend to be friendly and more outgoing. I had a hard time in Finland and Estonia (and basically all of the Baltic States and Scandinavia) because people tend to be distant and not as... forward.

I dont know any people from Estonia and of course can't say that I know how people in Finland are because i only know some persons from that country. BUTTT the people i do know like Kerttu @Torakka and @QueenOfRaccoons are both really nice persons!! 😊😊 I know Kerttu the best and she has really funny way of humour which i like a LOTTT. And i really love the posts of @QueenOfRaccoons like forum on weekend show and Facial Wednesday. So the people i DO know of Finland are really nice. And I expect the same from Estonia unless i have really good reason to believe differently. But i can of course not base that on just knowing a few people so i cant say anything more about that.

Haha I wouldn't say unfriendly.. just. Not the same kind of sociable as Americans tend to be. Like.. ok.. I was in Oulu and I was going to visit an old friend who just bought new house.

Usually, a bottle of wine or something is the traditional housewarming gift, so i went to the Alko shop. I walked around aimlessly and then asked one of the guys who worked there to help me find what I was looking for.

"It's over there," he said pointing.

And that was it.. no.. "Here, I'll show you" or "follow me," or anything like that.

And yes. I eventually found what I was looking for lol.

Hahah that is funny actually i think!!! If u lived in Finland u can tell better how people are like generally. But only knowing a few does not mean u know Finnish or Estonian people so i only know two say i cant say the same like u can or like Kerttu or others can. But the two persons i mentioned are really nice persons and i think u know Kerttu already from the forum right? 🙂

Yes .. we've crossed paths, I'm sure. But some of the people mentioned it cannot message directly, and I am not keen on messaging people at random about a cultural thing lol

Finland has changed a lot in the last years.

Finland has changed a lot in the last years.

I'm sure it has... I will say that of the Baltic people, I found Estonians to be the nicest..

The original question:

The langauges are diffrent we may understand some words but its still a compleatly diffrent language. Its like swedish and danish and norwegian for example. They can understand eachother somewhat but not fully. And in my opinion the writing is harder to understand but speaking is pretty easy for undertanding estonian.

As for the argument weather finns are brainless:

Yea no it depends on who you talk with and where they are from. Im from the countryside so i am more traditional and religious than a person from Helsinki. Or any other city. City people are more welcoming to foreingers cause they are kinda forced to be and they are raised in a more welcoming but still tighter environment. But scientificly we have one off the highest iq scores.

And rigth none off you know finland as a whole after knowing two people. Thats just utterly foolish. But i can say i know Finland quite well. Cause im 100% finnish blood and have relatives from most regions.

Yes we are distand we belive personal space is importnat and we dont waste our time trying to be fake nice as i always see on the internet and movies and all that. We say things as they are. Changing the way you say it dosent change facts. So why bother.

And yes finland has changed and i dont really like that. Its gotten more more diverse for example. Its gone so far i avoid specific citys and places. And another thing is internet. Internet changes finlands identity many young people dont even speak proper finnish anymore despite being native finns. I just find that sad. And young people are also stupid they dont appriciate what they have and how lucky they are to be born in finland. As i am writing this i suddenly feel like a old grandma.

But i belive the original question wasnt if we are stupid here so lets keep the conversation in topic and try to act like mature adults.

Thank you!

I always thought it might be something like US English and British English. Now I know there are very distinct differences. Remember, to my ears and eyes, it sounds very similar.

As to the intelligence of Finns. Finland tops the world in literacy rates, so that must mean something.

It wasn't that I was particularly upset about Finns being distant or aloof. I actually kind of liked it. No pointless civility when it wasn't necessary. It DID make breaking the ice, as we say, difficult. Americans are all about vibes and chemistry. It's annoying, but when you're born and raised in an environment, it rubs off on you. Outgoing and extroverted are the order here. Reserved tends to be perceived as standoffish. Like when I was at a bar in Helsinki once. I met a really cool girl and things seemed to be going well, but i couldn't really tell if she was interested or not and so, I defaulted to the "not."

That said. Thank you for answering this burning question 🙂

As far as I know the finnish government try to reduce the times that pupils and people look on displays.

And for foreigners I think its hard to come around with the finnish style of communication but personally I think its better than e.g. in Brazil, where dates are just speeches not to disappoint the opponent or spanish like speaking all the time.

For introverts, Finland is a good address

Are you a psycho?

No

And why do you provide Im a criminal? Come Out of your bubble!

Yea its not like british and american english. I think theyr words have more vocals and more consonant groups cause with time it has changed. And they got diffrent letters aswell that wr dont have for example Õ that is impossible to say. What also makes estonian hard for me to say is the fact that the vocals in words dont follow the same rulers as for us. They just mix it up.

And yea we are intoroverts paradise i havent said a full sentance in two days. And also i love that silence is engouraged and its not akward but comfy.
