Hello everyone !
Today, let’s talk about food, and about the different ways people have a meal together in each country. It’s about the customs of each country during a collective meal.
What are the common meal customs in your country?
What are the customs in your country when several people eat together at the same table?
What is considered good, and what is frowned upon? What is considered polite or impolite?
Are there certain things considered obligatory, or forbidden?
Thanks In advance to the people who answer !
In Egypt, eating with family is an essential part of our daily lives and reflects the values of family togetherness.
Common customs include sitting together around the table, or sometimes on the floor, and placing plates in the middle so everyone can share.
When we eat together it is important to wait until everyone is together before starting, this shows respect for the family.
Food is usually presented in a very simple way.
What is viewed negatively is talking loudly, overeating, or behaving in a chaotic manner.
In general, meals in Egypt are not just a time to eat, but rather an opportunity for family communication and strengthening bonds between family members.

In Algeria and Many Arabic and Muslim countries, people often eat and share a same big plate. They are all gathered around the plate and each person has to eat what is in front of him in his plate. It is very unpolite to eat what is in front of someone else. It’s like you are stealing his part. @Fleurke @psysarah15 do you have this same tradition with family or common meals ?

That's a nice way to have a meal together. 😊 Tho, what do you do when you're full already or want to eat some more? I can imagine it's unpolite to have leftovers as well as eating more.

If there is more food and you would like to eat, I think there’s nothing wrong in asking for more, family may give you some! And if you leave leftovers it’s still okay. You might have eaten enough of been full and can’t eat anymore. 🙂

What if there isn't any more food? At my house we sometimes take bread if we're really not full after a dinner. That's not disrespectful for us, but I can imagine it is in other countries.

No it isn’t 😊 We do that as well. When there’s no food left you can eat some bread or drink something like juice or tea
