Is the world as dangerous as it is portrayed in the media?
I've been to a few countries, but I would't say so. For the most part people are people. Did I have my encounters of stereotypes. Yes there's a reason all countries have their stereotypes, but for the most part people are pretty nice.
Someone tried to rob in Romania once. Didn't go as he wanted. I lived in a pretty secure neighborhood. But I've also seen people help each other abroad. I've given a helping hand. And I've been given a helping hand as well.
Your opinions? And if You've never been abroad... where'd you like to go as a first timer?
There was an old Latin phrase “Hic sunt dracones”. It is a Latin phrase that translates to “Here be dragons”. It is in fact an anachronism that pays tribute to the practice of putting illustrations of mythical creatures on medieval maps to indicate unexplored or dangerous territories, serving as a warning to travelers. The phrase originated during a time when cartographers had limited knowledge of distant lands, and they would sometimes embellish their maps with mythical creatures like dragons. Not much changed since then, only the media has taken the place of cartographers. They simply try to convience us in that it is safer to live in our known aquarium than the unkown waters of an ocean. Danger is not in a land but in the sense of "forborne" diverstity. In my point of view, life is nothing but an adventure, and we can't speak of an adventure in the safety of our promoted "cage". Knowledge is the strongest armour against any kind of probable danger. Get informed on the places you travel and "When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do". Don't think that your culture and social etiquettes are universally valid. Show respect and paid back. Then you are bounded by no boundaries, contained by no countries, tamed by no time. The world has a lot to offer.
