Is the world as dangerous as it is portrayed in the media?

I've been to a few countries, but I would't say so. For the most part people are people.
Did I have my encounters of stereotypes. Yes there's a reason all countries have their stereotypes, but for the most part people are pretty nice.

Someone tried to rob in Romania once. Didn't go as he wanted. I lived in a pretty secure neighborhood.
But I've also seen people help each other abroad. I've given a helping hand. And I've been given a helping hand as well.

Your opinions? And if You've never been abroad... where'd you like to go as a first timer?

There was an old Latin phrase “Hic sunt dracones”. It is a Latin phrase that translates to “Here be dragons”. It is in fact an anachronism that pays tribute to the practice of putting illustrations of mythical creatures on medieval maps to indicate unexplored or dangerous territories, serving as a warning to travelers. The phrase originated during a time when cartographers had limited knowledge of distant lands, and they would sometimes embellish their maps with mythical creatures like dragons. Not much changed since then, only the media has taken the place of cartographers. They simply try to convience us in that it is safer to live in our known aquarium than the unkown waters of an ocean. Danger is not in a land but in the sense of "forborne" diverstity. In my point of view, life is nothing but an adventure, and we can't speak of an adventure in the safety of our promoted "cage". Knowledge is the strongest armour against any kind of probable danger. Get informed on the places you travel and "When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do". Don't think that your culture and social etiquettes are universally valid. Show respect and paid back. Then you are bounded by no boundaries, contained by no countries, tamed by no time. The world has a lot to offer.

I love the world and I don‘t use mass media😊 l

I think that not. Is not so dangerous. I have been in many places, even in some that I before have though that where dangerous. But in the world happend bad things. When one goes to countries that media say that are dangerous, usually one goes to turistic places that are secure.

But there are dangerous places, and there is crime and war.

I do not think the world is as dangerous as people think it is but it depends. You could be in an extremely safe European city and something horrible could still happen to you. It's unlikely that total strangers will try to harm you. Mostly, people who you know might be more likely to harm you. I guess this world we live in so random and there's so much uncertainty. That's what feels dangerous more than anything else. Of course, I'm leaving out countries that are actively being attacked by more powerful countries. If bombs are raining down on any place, whether that's Palestine or Ukraine, it is dangerous.

The world is dangerous enough to deserve caution, but not so dangerous that it doesn't deserve hope.

It is sure that we are living a period of uncertainty and upheavals, but history has shown to me that it will go eventually. The question is when. Of course, there are countries where it feels generally safer, and there are countries that are unfortunately ravaged by wars and other human or natural catastrophes. The main problem is that the international organizations either have no power to compel countries - especially the powerful ones - to do something or they are utterly useless.

We live a world that extremely oversaturated with stimuli. Ted K would have probably likened that to "over socialization," but I digress.

Perception is reality. For example,

1) The murder rate has steadily dropped here in the US for the past few years, but watching the news, or YouTube and TikTok, you wouldn't think so. As cold as this sounds, gun violence tends to occur here in specific places among people who have made certain lifestyle choices. If you're here as a tourist, or even an expat, it's unlikely you'll have a need to be in these places.

2) Sadly, the US has more school shootings than other developing countries, but statically speaking, they are still rare, and schools are among the safest places you can be. Gun Control orgs often fiddle with the data in order to make seem like it's a bigger problem than it is, they've literally been called out on this more than once.

3) Everyone has the equivalent of a news crew in their pocket these days. Let's face it, violence is a daily occurrence everywhere in the world, but we don't see it and therefore, we don't really consider it. Now, I can show a guy slapping his girlfriend in the mall, a group of thugs shoplifting from local CVS or an attempted carjacking and upload it to wherever almost instantly, where literally an audience of billions can see it. Multiply uploaders by 1000... see where I'm going with this?

Fact: In my 51 years.. I was robbed at gunpoint here (in the USA. I lived in DC at the time) once, and that was almost 30 years ago. I was robbed twice in London (on two different visits). Once at knife point and once at gunpoint. I was also robbed in Riga. Two of these robberies happened because I put myself in those situations (by being too trusting). I was nearly ripped off in Guangzhou (the notorious Tea Shop scam), but I put up such a fuss that it attracted the police and the scammers backed off. Again, I was being too trusting.

As someone already stated, the world is a dangerous place and not just because of the possibility of violence but because people are going to take advantage of you, especially if you aren't local. Learn the culture so that you can see signs of dishonesty. Don't be afraid to call attention to an issue. Learn what areas are best avoided, and never, ever assume that just because you aren't the "typical (insert nationality or whatever)," that people will treat you differently.

Heightened awareness isn't a sin, it's a natural survival mechanism.
