We invent them ourselfve. You play with dice and pawns, go through many fields, on some of them are rewards,on others penalties,shortcuts or linger ways to go.the other version is that you need to draw cards with tasks if you are on the marked fields.
It's great way to have fun with kids. First when you make it together with them and after when you play in game you did together.

Oh hey, in my homecountry Vietnam, there's a version of that game, we called it "Cờ cá ngựa". The only different thing is the pieces, which resemble horses.
I think we Vietnamese have that game thanks to the French, as I tried to look it up on Wikipedia, in French it is called "Jeu des petits chevaux".
For my reply to your question. Does chess count? We usually play chess on a thing called "chessboard", so it must also be a boardgame, right?
I enjoy chess, but not a really good player now by the way, but I always have room for improvement.
