since there are many asians here, this is the perfect place where i can ask this:
i noticed that asians are very obsessed with being skinny and they immediatly notice if you gain weight, being skinny is really important for them. i've noticed it with asians friends of my town
honestly it's not overall true, some of asians have obsession to become skinny (they do strict diet, and keep their weight) but also some of them have skinny genetic, so no matter how much they eat, their metabolism will works so quick and it making them stay skinny.
but for obsession to become skinny, It all makes sense, for example in South Korea, most of the people will be more appreciated, looked up to if they are beautiful/handsome, if they have a good body (especially when they finally make it to become an idol).
Because There, racism and bullying rates are very high even among fellow Koreans. And the worst thing is that most Koreans believe that they are much better than foreigners who live/work/holiday to korea. so yea, korea not as beautiful as the ones in K-Dramas and the idol not as kind as it seen on TV.
It is a VERYYY difficult topic. For example if we buy smt in the super market and it is fatty than my mom will say automatically that it makes you fat. But she also speaks for herself. But on the other hand she is concerned abt my weight still not being enough. And if she is concerned and we look at series than she can say somebody who she finds super pretty and beautiful. But if i would be that person she would say i would need to gain more weight. So everything is very double. My aunt is exactly the same in that way.
And if i am in China to family than one of my cousins will not tell me if i would be skinnier. But if i am bigger she would notice that i am becoming fatter. Some of my family really doesnt care. But from everywhere people are also saying so many messages everywhere. My dad does not really mind if i would get bigger but he is a little bit like the smiling buddha!!!!!! 😛😛 But for him weight is not really important. And more generally for guys it matters MUCHHHH less.
It is less stressful for me than i know for SOMEEE of my family in China who are very concerned about it. Almost all of my friends are in The Netherlands are bigger than me. And i already know what i need to not be underweight anymore. But still sometimes i think that doctors here only think in a western way when you are underweight or not. And not really in an Asian way or that they dont always take into account what is normal if you have Asian body type. So with all the differences and the MANYYY different signals that people give and all the day with double messages it is really sometimes very tiring and not easy to deal with it.
Sorry that i wrote a lot and maybe a bit confusing. But it also feels like that in my head when i think abt it. 😐😐
It's true for a lot of Asian cultures. People are more forthright about weight fluctuations, and being slender is frequently seen as a sign of self-control, health, and beauty. Pop culture, conventional values, and family conventions all have an impact on it.
Fortunately, younger generations are also increasingly adopting a body-positive mindset.

It is true but also super difficult i think. Bc everybody has opinions about everything and when a lot of people say double things than i dont know what they REALLY mean. So they can say dont get more skinny but in the meantime they can say if smb is very beautiful from a series and that person is super skinny. Or they say that some food can make you fat even if maybe they say it to themselves but they say it very often.
And it is not only being skinny but for example in some countries it is also very normal to get plastic surgery like for shoulder fillers, or that you look bigger in other ways or your lips with fillers or abt your legs so you look taller or other things. I would definately NOTTTTTT do that but it is not only that you are skinny but like you have to be perfect everywhere. And i think maybe also to answer Rose that in Asia there can be sometimes a LOTTTT of pressure. It is less when you are Asian but you live for example in Europe. But it also depends how your friends and family think abt it.
