Interview with @Miss_Penpal 02.07.2026

Thank you very much that I can interview you for the forum Miss_Penpal!! 🙏🙏 I already wanted that some time but now with the vacation it is maybe MUCHHH easier for you to write answers!!! 😊 So i have 20 questions but in each part i ask only 5!! And if you dont like a question i can change it of course!! 😛 😛

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ PART I

1: How long are you a member on PPG and what are the things that you like the most? What kind of forums do you like and what kind of chats and friends? And do you maybe have tips for @Etienne to make PPG nicer?

I didn't really keep track of how long I've been on Penpal Gate for, I don't even remember what year I started. My profile says I've been here for over two years, so let's go with that. There are no forums I dislike, but I prefer the ones that inform about updates or the ones that are like playing a game. And of course I like everyone who takes the time to write back, but I like it even more when the answers are a bit longer than a word or two, because it's a bit boring to keep a conversation going when there isn't any content in it. As for making Penpal Gate better, I think it's great already and I wouldn't want to pressure anyone with a huge project that looks small to us non-coders. But I could use a feature that tells when I've joined because I'm horrible at remembering dates, haha.

2: What is your homecity like and do you live in the centre or do you live in a different part of your city? And what is your neighbourhood like? What is the nicest place of your city that we must see if we would visit it? And is there a place that you like the most?

I live in Quebec City, a bit west of the city centre. The neighbourhood was not so bad when my family moved here, but over time the cute buildings and the few houses left got demolished to make bigger buildings that look like nothing. Our house is the only one left on our street and it's difficult to go from point A to point B from the house because of all the construction sites, we're pretty much surrounded at the moment. The part I like the most in the city is the Monique-Corriveau library, it's a church that was turned into a library. I like to go there because of course there are books, but there are also study rooms, computers you can use with a library card, movies and games you can rent, and there's also a room with puzzles you can do. And I would recommend visiting the Bois-de-Coulonge Park, it's a beautiful place to go take a walk.

3: Last years you were homeschooled and this year you went to school. Was it really different or the same what you expected? And how did the year go? If you can choose again: would you wanted to start earlier at the school or do you prefer to be homeschooled? And if you have children would you send them to school or also homeschool them?

Going to public school and being homeschooled are obviously very different, mostly because of the amount of people you get to see. I guessed accurately enough what the main changes would be before going, so I wasn't too surprised when I changed from homeschool to public school. At home, it was pretty lonely, especially after my siblings went back to public school while I continued to be homeschooled. It took some discipline to do all the work on time, and I also didn't have teachers for many of the subjects, I only learnt from books. That was a bit difficult, especially in math. In public school, I had much more support and help with the school subjects, but there was a lot of noise and people everywhere that I wasn't used to, and that was a big challenge for most of the year. I liked both my experiences equally, I don't prefer school over homeschool or vice versa. Both had their ups and downs, and I'm glad I did both instead of just one, but I don't prefer one over the other. I think because I was homeschooled for so long, I got to notice and appreciate the changes of the environment fully. When I have children, I'd like to make them try both and let them choose what they prefer. I'm not sure that will be possible, but it's what I'm hoping for.

4: What skills or talens do you have that people maybe dont expect from you? And is there a skill that you would LIKE to learn that you dont have yet?

I can solve one face of a Rubik's cube, but not the full thing yet. I'm still working on it. I can touch my head with my feet by making an 'O' with my body, I can fold my tongue and use it as a straw (like a bee!) and I can cross my eyes. Other than that, I think I learn things rather quickly if I actually try. There are a lot of skills I'd like to learn, for example learning multiple languages, getting very good at decorating cakes, learning how to repair clocks, learn figure skating, learn how to yodel, and I could go on forever because there are so many awesome things I don't know how to do yet.

5: What are three things that you would really love to do in the next 5 years and are your biggest dreams? And do you think that you will do that in next 5 years?

1. Graduate navigation school

2. Find a romantic partner

3. Make lasting friendships

I think those things are completely possible. The program at the navigation school lasts three or four years (I always forget which it is), so even if something goes wrong I should be done in five years. Making friends will be easier once I go to the navigation school, at least I think so, because I'll have interests in common with the people there and I'll see them almost every day. As for a romantic partner, that's a bit more tricky to know, but five years is a long time so I think it shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you very much for the first part of this interview @Miss_Penpal!! 🙏🙏😊😊 If anybody wants to ask a question or post a comment you can do that below ⬇️⬇️ or write @Miss_Penpal a message!! 🙂 More interviews of PPG members are on this page: overview of interviews.

Thanksss @Miss_Penpal!!!! 🙂 Sorry to already ask bc i should actually make next part with questions but i already wanted to make sure now: do u live in the French or the English part of Canada?? Or does everybody where u live speak BOTH languages equally? And what do u speak at home or with like family and friends the most?? 🙄🙄

I live in the French speaking part of Canada. Here we speak French in our daily life, there are even laws to protect the French language in the province. But we learn English at school and even if not everyone is good at it (actually a lot of people in Quebec don't understand much English), at my school it wasn't uncommon to see some teenagers talking to each other in English (mostly gamers and nerds though).

I think it is a bit the same like in Belgium where in some parts they speak Dutch and other part French but in every part u must learn both but it is not always equal but i think @Fleurke, @Itsmehhh and @WilliamR know more about it. But i guess u must learn BOTH languages right?? So that is the same in Quebec but im not sure if other provinces in Canada it is also obliged that u learn French if everybody else speaks English. I hope yes so it is more equal too. 🙄🙄🙄

6: Can you cook or bake things and if yes what is the best dish that you can make? What kind of dishes and drinks do you like the MOST?? And if you can only choose ONE cuisine for the rest of your life: which do you choose? And do you have a favourite restaurant in your city or province in Canada?

With a recipe I can bake anything, but cooking is a bit more tricky. I might need a tutorial haha. In my opinion, the best dish I can make is cake, because I love cake. But I can also make good grilled cheese sandwiches. I'm not very picky when it comes to the taste of foods, what's important is mostly the texture. But I like sweet things and spicy things. If I had to choose only one cuisine for the rest of my life, I think I would choose Indian cuisine because it has very interesting flavours and a lot of different dishes so I wouldn't get sick of it. I don't like restaurants much because of all the people, but there's one called Cora that I went to with my family when I was younger, so I have good memories there. They have pancakes with fruits and syrups that are so good. Also, there's one close to the library I talked about in the first part of the interview, so that's nice.

7: Do you like to play sports and if yes what kind of sports did you play? And are there sports that you still want to learn in the future? And can you play music instruments or sing or do you want to do that in the future?

I dislike most sports, but there are a few that I would accept to do. The only sport I can say I practice is fencing, because I've had classes. But right now the session is over and I'll possibly be too busy to sign up for a new session next year. I'm not planning on stopping forever though! I'm just taking a short break to not get overwhelmed. Other than fencing, I respect swimming, horseback riding, tennis and badminton. Running too, but I'm not good at it. I could play the piano and acoustic guitar if I tried, but the reality is that I don't. I have the instruments but not the discipline...

8: If you can change 3 things in your country: what do you choose and why? Do you think that if you are 16 in your country that you should also be allowed to vote?

That's a difficult question. There are a lot of minor things that could be changed to make my country a better place, and I'm not very aware of the bigger things since I don't care much for politics and corruption. I think the shops could use some work. For example, shop websites can say they have something in stock but when you go to the shop, they don't have it and you're told that "they have no control over the website", which makes no sense, because how do you not have control of your own website and no control over who makes the inventory? Other than that, it doesn't apply to the whole country, but I think the government of Quebec should get over their obsession with construction cones. It's ridiculous, you know you're nearing Quebec when you start seeing cones in places where they're not even needed. It costs something to rent those cones so it's a waste of money on top of being ugly. Lastly, there are more and more places who don't accept cash as payment. That's annoying because not everyone has a credit or debit card, especially teenagers and children. As for voting, I think it's a bit like driving as in it has nothing to do with age. Voting is about awareness, there are children who would be ready to vote and adults who aren't.

9: What do you think of living at the navigation school next year instead of with your parents at home? And do you know others at the navigation school? Do you also have tasks in the school or only studying and maybe sports? And what do you want to do after you finish the school?

I'm a bit nervous, especially since I'm moving in only a bit over a month... but I'm also excited, it'll be a new and interesting experience. I think it'll be difficult at first, but I'll get used to it and everything will be fine. I don't think I know anyone at the school, but who knows, I could get surprised. I'm not sure what I'll have to do at the school yet, I haven't even gotten my schedule yet. But I know that there will be an internship every year where you get to put into practice what you've learned, and that there's a simulation room. After I graduate from the navigation school, I'll probably start working right away since I'd like to save up so I can pay back anything I need to pay back. I'll definitely go visit my family too, since I won't see them often after moving to the school.

10: What are your plans for the summer vacation? And does your family still have the cabin and if yes what is it like and is it in nature? Do you go there often with your whole family?

My plans for this summer are to get my Discharge Book for the navigation school, and after that I'll pretty much pack, move, and get adapted to my new school... The school year starts in August, so my summer is almost over already. We still have the cabin, but it's under construction and it'll take a while before we can live in it. The property is mostly flat and full of weeds, but there's a very small part near the back that has some trees. We put a hammock there some summers. My sister is camping on the land in our camping car this summer because she got a job around there, and we go visit her to bring things she needs and to see her. But last time my parents went alone, since I wasn't feeling like traveling again after coming back from our trip to the USA. I was in a car for too long for the trip, I needed a break from travelling.

Thank you very much for answering the questions of this new part @Miss_Penpal!!! 😊😊 I will soon make the questions of the new part but if in the meantime anybody wants to also ask questions or post comments you can do that below!! Thank you very much!!!! 🙏🙏🌈🌞

PART III

11: What kind of clothing style do you like? Is it different when you are at home or when you will be at the navigation school? Do you have like special school uniform? And do you prefer uniform or just normal clothing that you can choose yourself?

I like outfits that make me feel like a princess. I have lots of tulle skirts and shirts with puffy sleeves, but also simple dresses. And my skirts or dresses always reach at least below the knees because it's part of my religion but also because I feel more comfortable that way. I don't dress differently depending on where I go since I'm always dressed fancy, I'm sure a lot of people think I overdress. I might wear more pants at the navigation school, since I might have to do things where I could get a skirt stuck. And there isn't a uniform at the navigation school, but I think it would be nice if there was one because uniforms are so cool and they make it feel more special when you hang out with friends and they're not wearing the uniform for once.

12: What kind of books do you normally like to read? And do you read paper books or just on reader or different? And if you would write a book about ANY topic what would you choose? And if you would have to write a biography who would you choose as the topic?

I like fantasy, mystery, crime, horror, thriller, sometimes romance, and some self help books are really good. So basically I like everything. I read both paper books and online books, it depends on which one is easier to find. I'm writing a book already, and I'm not sure what the genre is exactly because I like mixing things, but I guess it's mostly fantasy. As for writing a biography, I've always thought Louis Pasteur was a very interesting person. He's the one who invented the rabies vaccine, but he did lots of other awesome things too.

13: What are things that you would do the SAME when you're a mom and you have children and what are things that you would do maybe DIFFERENT then in your youth? And which lesson from maybe your parents or your grandparents helped you a lot and you think may also be useful for your children to know? And do you have any items when you were super small that you saved so that your children can maybe have them (like special toys or gifts, letters or photos or anything)?

I definitely need to work on my laziness and to learn more recipes to offer at least some variety of meals, but I think I'm already pretty good with kids other than that. My family taught me that sometimes you have to push a child to do something when they won't create healthy interests of their own. Personally, I would have never started fencing if my mother didn't come up to me one day and said "pick a sport you lazy child" (she didn't actually say that, but I'm sure she thought about it at least once). And it's the same for yourself, you need to push yourself to do things even if you don't want to, otherwise you'll never achieve anything. I didn't keep anything for my future children because my mother took care of that. She kept clothes, plushies and toys.

14: What are the biggest fears that you have and what do you do to calm down and be more relaxed again? Do you like yoga or meditation or ASMR or just distracting yourself?

I've been working on my fears since pretty much forever, so I don't have many left. The most annoying one right now is my fear of saliva, I can't share a glass of water or anything because it disgust me so much. Sometimes I can't even drink out of my own glass twice, I have to turn it to a side I haven't touched yet. I can't really do anything about that one since it's more disgust than fear and exposure therapy is NOT going to work. But my fear of spiders is much easier to take care of, it's almost all gone. I'm only afraid of spiders of specific sizes and shapes now, so most are fine to me. My way of overcoming my fears is to learn more about them, that way I know how they're not so bad after all and eventually I'm just fine with them. I like calm things, so meditation and ASMR can be nice sometimes, but I use those when I'm stressed and not when I'm scared. And I don't like all kinds of ASMR, I'm actually very picky when it comes to things like that.

15: How would your dream future look like? What kind of house would you want to live in and in what kind of place (like super big city or more in nature or a small town)? Would you have pets and how many children? What kind of partner would you like to have and would you also work and have a job when you are a mom? What kind of hobbies would you want to have later when you have a family?

I absolutely love Victorian houses or houses with elaborate structures. I prefer smaller villages where everyone knows each other over big cities, and I think pets are really nice but only when you can properly care for them, so I'll see about that when I get there. For children, I was thinking of having at least two, but it might depend on how things go since I'm planning on working, and working as a mother will be a bit complicated. I know that in the maritime industry, companies try to let their employees stay on land for six months so they can have a social life and rest a bit, and even if it means I'll be fully free for half the year, that still means I would be away for the other half of the year. As for hobbies, there are too many to choose from. I'd like to take some time to learn some skills like repairing clocks, trying carpentry, learning how to make wooden furniture myself, etc. And of course continue fencing too, on top of spending time with my family. Maybe I could learn what my family's interests are, and then do whatever they want to do with them. That way I can learn skills and spend time with my family at the same time.
