Yes, usually, the day itself is chosen as the occasion, and the party is arranged
so that friends and relatives can attend. A weekend day is often the preferred
choice. In societies where the Vedic Tradition is still alive, things are somewhat
slightly different.
In such societies, attention is paid to the positions of the stars at the time of birth.
More specifically, to the phase of the moon. We are familiar with this approach, for
example, from the ‘Lunar Calendar’, which is often used to carry out certain activities
at an auspicious time. Examples include cutting hair, chopping wood, or even deter-
mining whether a girl or a boy is desired as a child....
The basis for these calculations is drawn from ASTRONOMY. For our Earth’s satellite, a
complete phase lasts 29.53 days. During this time, the beautiful celestial body passes
through 27 distinct positions (lunar houses). Each of these positions has four distinct
cycles: Beginning – Stillness – Interaction – End. This results in 108 (27x4) clearly dif-
ferentiated positions in which the moon appears briefly during its journey.
We are born in one of these positions and the Day-of-Birth falls rarely on it again,
during our lifetime. BUT ... it is this position in witch we feel the moment of our
birth much more. It is the moment, when we took our first own breath after we
have disconnected from our mother or better, umbilical cord.
To celebrate this moment is a quite unique thing.
