🙄 Are you brave? 💪

We have been frequent travelers in the African wild and found out that there is a very thin line between being brave and outright stupid. The latter description also applies to many of our - often rather naive - actions in the past. We have been quite lucky numerous times in a place which is not forgiving when luck runs out…

9️⃣ If you can surf in the nicest beach in the world but there are sometimes sharks: would you do that?

In my youth and early adulthood I did many things which I considered to be brave and courageous at the time. Reminiscing about these moments and warping myself back in time I currently think it would be more appropriate to consider them plain reckless and nearing borderline stupidity. Unfortunately, some personal traits remain persistent and work like a burning flame to a moth.

Thnxxx @lori4na, @rambob, @BartL and @Savi2024 for posting!!!! 🙏😊🙏 For loriii @lori4na I understand what you say abt shark attacks and that they are super rare BUTTT if they happen you are like in TWO and if it goes wrong it goes SUPER HORROR WRONG!!!! So that is why for me that is the biggest fear!!!! 😬😬 And i think @rambob is right abt the warnings but maybe they havent seen the shark yet and after it attacks you only then there is a warning. I think there is nothing scarier!!!!!! ❌🆘💀🦈

And i wanted to ask @rambob: why do you think that if you work on oil rig is the most dangerous? Is maybe bc of explosions and if that happens then everything explodes or do you mean differently?

What did you do @Savi2024 that you regret?? 😬😵‍💫

For @BartL i challenge you to wear one of these outfits bc what you said abt question 7 😋😝😝😜🤪🤪🤪 If you dare it!!!! 🙂

Working on an offshore oil rig is often described as "city life on a floating tin can," but with the added twist that the tin can is sitting on top of a highly pressurized volcano.

If you were to step onto a rig today, here is the reality of the dangers you’d be facing, broken down from your perspective.

1. The "Invisible" Enemies

On a rig, what you can’t see is often more dangerous than what you can.

  • H2S Gas (Hydrogen Sulfide): This is a silent, colorless gas that can leak during drilling. In small doses, it smells like rotten eggs; in high doses, it deadens your sense of smell instantly and can be fatal within seconds. You’d be wearing a personal monitor at all times that screams if it detects even a trace.

  • High Pressure: You are essentially poking a needle into a pressurized balloon miles under the earth. If the "kick" (pressure surge) isn't managed perfectly, it leads to a blowout—a catastrophic explosion of oil and gas.

2. The "Heavy Metal" Environment

Imagine working in a giant, vertical factory that never stops moving.

  • Crush Hazards: Everything on a rig is massive, made of steel, and slick with mud or oil. Whether it’s the drill pipe or the "iron roughneck" (the machine that connects pipes), one misstep or a lapse in communication with your team can result in "line of fire" injuries—meaning you’re in the wrong place when 10 tons of steel starts moving.

  • Heights and Falls: You aren't just on a deck; you’re often hundreds of feet above a freezing, churning ocean. Even with harnesses and "100% tie-off" rules, the wind and rain make every ladder and walkway a potential hazard.

3. Fatigue

This is arguably the most common danger.

  • The 12-Hour Grind: You’ll likely work 12 hours on and 12 hours off for 14 to 21 days straight. By day 10, your brain is "foggy."

  • The "Routine" Trap: When you do the same high-risk task 50 times a day, your brain starts to treat it as "safe." That’s usually when accidents happen.

4. Getting There and Staying There

The danger starts before you even set foot on the deck.

  • The Chopper Ride: Statistically, one of the most dangerous parts of the job is the helicopter transport to the rig. Flying over open water in unpredictable weather is a high-stress event every single time.

  • Isolation: If you have a medical emergency, you are hours (or days, depending on weather) away from a hospital. While there’s a medic on board, they are limited in what they can handle.

Wowww i think you are RIGHT abt that it is really dangerous and what you write it is clear that accidents can happen REALLY fast and if it does happen than it is a huge problem bc you are far away and nobody can really help. 😬😬 But can i ask: did you work yourself on a platform bc you know a LOTTTT abt it!! If yes: then i hope that you do other work now bc of the dangers.

BUTTT still i know jobs that are more dangerous: a shark dentist, a crocodile massage therapist, a lion hair styler and maybe a piranha yoga instructor. 😇😇😇

Sure thing, if we meet and you bring it ill wear it and walk the whole day next to you.

1️⃣ If you have a mega crush on one of your friends or somebody you know really well: would you say that?

Well, probably not. The chance of it being mutual would be so tiny it would be better not to mess things up. People tend to get weird after you share you have a crush with them. Well, if it seemed like the crush was two-sided, then maybe I'd think about it more. But it would be super complicated anyways.

2️⃣ You are alone at home and you hear somewhere that glass breaks suddenly!!!!! Do you check it out or maybe hide?

Would have to check it out, obviously, but depending on the circumstances, possibly armed with a skillet or something :-P

3️⃣ Would you jump with a parachute out of a plane one time in your life?

Would be fun, actually.

4️⃣ Would you be brave to walk in a forest alone if it people say it is haunted?

Sure. I've had some creepy experiences, but the really scary meetings I have had are with living people, so I can take my chances with ghosts.

5️⃣ Are you brave bc of something that you do even if you are NOTTT afraid of it? ORRR do you have to be afraid to be brave or it doesnt count?

If you're not even afraid, then you can't be brave. Being brave is doing something even though it's scary.

6️⃣ You can interview a murderer in a very dangerous prison for a Netflix series. Would you do that?

Why not. He's behind bars, there's safety measures. It's just talk. Would be interesting to find out what goes on in their head. Would still be scary, though, at least at first.

7️⃣ Would you wear anything you like even if you know others have strong opinions abt it?

To an extent I do this. I try to tone down my weird, but as I've got older, I've cared less and less of what other people think, so maybe what I wear is going to get stranger still... :-P

8️⃣ What is the scariest job in the whole world? Would you do that?

Being a soldier or firefighter. I suppose I might, if I was healthy enough for such, but I'm not.

9️⃣ If you can surf in the nicest beach in the world but there are sometimes sharks: would you do that?

People eat more sharks than sharks eat people so they aren't as dangerous as people make them out to be. That said, there's no reason to be stupid and put yourself on the plate for no reason at all. So if there were definitely sharks, then nope. If there possibly might be, then I might. Can't surf, though :-D

🔟 What is the weirdest game show or reality show that you ever saw on tv? And if they give 50.000 Euros: would you be in that show?

I don't really watch reality shows because most of them are idiotic. I saw this one once, where people were set up to live in an old manor as though they were in Austen-era England. That was pretty interesting. As for being on one of those shows, you need to put a lotta zeros into that sum before it's worth giving up privacy for!
