What are the common meal customs in your country? ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Dagelijks leven en gewoonten

Hello everyone !

Today, letโ€™s talk about food, and about the different ways people have a meal together in each country. Itโ€™s about the customs of each country during a collective meal.

What are the common meal customs in your country?

What are the customs in your country when several people eat together at the same table?

What is considered good, and what is frowned upon? What is considered polite or impolite?

Are there certain things considered obligatory, or forbidden?

Thanks In advance to the people who answer !

Hii @Sabri_KC!! Bonjour! ๐Ÿ™‚ This is a very nice forum! For us at home it is not Chinese and it is not Dutch but it is combination a bit. So it is Chutch or Dunese! ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜›

1๏ธโƒฃ So for us when we have dinner alone at home we always wait first for my dad to come home. Only when he is at home VERY late we eat together without my dad. But almost always he comes home for dinner. ๐Ÿ™‚

2๏ธโƒฃ We eat at our table and we DONT have the tv on and NO mobile phones are allowed. That is very strict rule. It is not polite to do that.

3๏ธโƒฃ Most of the times we eat Asian food with chopsticks and maybe a spoon. If you need a knife we often use scissors โœ‚๏ธ to make smaller pieces.

4๏ธโƒฃ We talk each after other about the day. But if my dad talks you really have to wait your turn or it is VERY impolite. Also if there are guests and they speak you have to wait for your turn. That is a rule.

5๏ธโƒฃ If we have guests it depends. It is very informal with my uncle and aunt because they live very close and are SO often in our house or sometimes we with them because you can just walk to each other ๐Ÿ˜› But if there are other guests we often dress nice like for example my dad wears a suit and a red tie and i have a red dress because you show the respect for the guest. But only if there are adults guests not with friends from school of course! ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜›

6๏ธโƒฃ I have friends who are Dutch the whole family and then if you eat with them it is very informal. So everybody can speak and you dont wait your turn and they use knife, forks and spoons and almost never chopsticks. And they eat a LOTTT and also very different dishes but if it is Dutch food it is super heavy with a lot of potatoes and red meats.

7๏ธโƒฃ I have friends who are from other places like i told @Parsaa from Iran but more are Moroccan or also Asian (most with family from mainland China) and they have very different rules. When I am with for example family from Iran or Morocco the first thing happens they give you MORE FOOD THAN YOU CAN EAT!!! They think i need more food and that i dont weigh enough and it is IMPOSSIBLE to eat everything.

I hope that this answers your questions @Sabri_KC!!! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

I really have no idea

๐Ÿ˜‚ turkey...too many...

for example we eat bread with bread ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜… (btw it tastes YUmmY!)

In Egypt, eating with family is an essential part of our daily lives and reflects the values โ€‹โ€‹of family togetherness.

Common customs include sitting together around the table, or sometimes on the floor, and placing plates in the middle so everyone can share.

When we eat together it is important to wait until everyone is together before starting, this shows respect for the family.

Food is usually presented in a very simple way.

What is viewed negatively is talking loudly, overeating, or behaving in a chaotic manner.

In general, meals in Egypt are not just a time to eat, but rather an opportunity for family communication and strengthening bonds between family members.

In Algeria and Many Arabic and Muslim countries, people often eat and share a same big plate. They are all gathered around the plate and each person has to eat what is in front of him in his plate. It is very unpolite to eat what is in front of someone else. Itโ€™s like you are stealing his part. @Fleurke @Sarahsalah27 do you have this same tradition with family or common meals ?

That's a nice way to have a meal together. ๐Ÿ˜Š Tho, what do you do when you're full already or want to eat some more? I can imagine it's unpolite to have leftovers as well as eating more.

If there is more food and you would like to eat, I think thereโ€™s nothing wrong in asking for more, family may give you some! And if you leave leftovers itโ€™s still okay. You might have eaten enough of been full and canโ€™t eat anymore. ๐Ÿ™‚

What if there isn't any more food? At my house we sometimes take bread if we're really not full after a dinner. That's not disrespectful for us, but I can imagine it is in other countries.

No it isnโ€™t ๐Ÿ˜Š We do that as well. When thereโ€™s no food left you can eat some bread or drink something like juice or tea
