Today, let’s talk about food, and about the different ways people have a meal together in each country. It’s about the customs of each country during a collective meal.

What are the customs in your country when several people eat together at the same table?

What is considered good, and what is frowned upon? What is considered polite or impolite?

Hii @Sabri_KC!! Bonjour! 🙂 This is a very nice forum! For us at home it is not Chinese and it is not Dutch but it is combination a bit. So it is Chutch or Dunese! 😛 😛 😛

1️⃣ So for us when we have dinner alone at home we always wait first for my dad to come home. Only when he is at home VERY late we eat together without my dad. But almost always he comes home for dinner. 🙂

2️⃣ We eat at our table and we DONT have the tv on and NO mobile phones are allowed. That is very strict rule. It is not polite to do that.

3️⃣ Most of the times we eat Asian food with chopsticks and maybe a spoon. If you need a knife we often use scissors ✂️ to make smaller pieces.

4️⃣ We talk each after other about the day. But if my dad talks you really have to wait your turn or it is VERY impolite. Also if there are guests and they speak you have to wait for your turn. That is a rule.

5️⃣ If we have guests it depends. It is very informal with my uncle and aunt because they live very close and are SO often in our house or sometimes we with them because you can just walk to each other 😛 But if there are other guests we often dress nice like for example my dad wears a suit and a red tie and i have a red dress because you show the respect for the guest. But only if there are adults guests not with friends from school of course! 😛 😛

6️⃣ I have friends who are Dutch the whole family and then if you eat with them it is very informal. So everybody can speak and you dont wait your turn and they use knife, forks and spoons and almost never chopsticks. And they eat a LOTTT and also very different dishes but if it is Dutch food it is super heavy with a lot of potatoes and red meats.

7️⃣ I have friends who are from other places like i told @Parsaa from Iran but more are Moroccan or also Asian (most with family from mainland China) and they have very different rules. When I am with for example family from Iran or Morocco the first thing happens they give you MORE FOOD THAN YOU CAN EAT!!! They think i need more food and that i dont weigh enough and it is IMPOSSIBLE to eat everything. 🍵🥧🌮🥗🥘🫕🍜🍲🍛🦪🥞🦪🍤🌭🍟🍕🫓🦴🍖😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

huhhh bread with bread? that is very special!!! so i think you really like bread!! 😛 i like the turkish small bites but they are also heavy. there is one with pistache that is very nice and you also have one with white and pink colours and it is super sweet but you can take a small part and it tastes very good!!

the point is for example in the village we even eat yoghurt with bread, cucumbers with bread, watermelon with bread ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING WITH BREAD EVEN BREAD!

Of course, this is a very important tradition that family members must respect .

Well in sri lanka everyone eats RICE or sometimes bread but mostly RICE like a lot of RICE AND CURRY.

That's a nice way to have a meal together. 😊 Tho, what do you do when you're full already or want to eat some more? I can imagine it's unpolite to have leftovers as well as eating more.

If there is more food and you would like to eat, I think there’s nothing wrong in asking for more, family may give you some! And if you leave leftovers it’s still okay. You might have eaten enough of been full and can’t eat anymore. 🙂

What if there isn't any more food? At my house we sometimes take bread if we're really not full after a dinner. That's not disrespectful for us, but I can imagine it is in other countries.

No it isn’t 😊 We do that as well. When there’s no food left you can eat some bread or drink something like juice or tea
