Usually people delete their message and send a new one but yes it isn't ideal. This is non trivial addition which is definitely in the "nice to have" list but probably not in the very near future

No, deleting a message doesn't leave "message deleted" in its place. Of course if they already received a notification on their device/email this can't be undone
