There is one question I am keen to ask and perhaps you know the answer. Is Portuguese as spoken in your native country also the norm in other countries where Portuguese is a first or second language? We have quite some friends in Brazil - notably in the state of Minas Gerais - and I am curious to find out whether there are any notable differences. It may be somewhat similar to “standard Spanish” versus the Latin American variations. Or is this comparison flawed?
Yes, Brazilian Portuguese can be totally different from ours. To begin with, they have their own accent, and depending on the region, their own unique accents! Words that mean one thing there and another in Portugal, for example!

We have visited Rio de Janeiro most frequently and areas in its direct vicinity such as Paraty and of course Ilha Grande. We have also traveled to Sao Paolo and in the north Lençois Maranhenses. Not sure about local variations and adaptations of Portuguese - our language proficiency in Portuguese is limited to a few words. One of the first words we picked up in Brazil was Caipirinha! 😉
We own a house, since many years, in Portugal. Its near Tabúa, an hour from Coimbra. We don't come there anymore as much as we would like to, and we still barely speak any Portugese. Some help would be nice.
