So : 中国古代的衣服是长袍 is right 🙂 In fact I had too translate a sentence to answer this question 中国古代的衣服怎么样? and I tried to answer with my own words, but about grammar am not sure to be right !!! because I never know when we have to write 了and if I can write 是 in my answer. But again you had saved and helped me 🙂

Well the word 了 can be used when you want to express "have been". For example I've had lunch is 我吃中午饭了
