Is it true that girls and guys can't ever have platonic friendships?

Okay so recently I went on omegle right? AAAA I REGRET IT, TRUST ME.

Anywho I went on it because I tend to just troll people or ask philosophical questions to add some light to my life, but yesterday I had a different experience. So just for context, I'm in a happy, content relationship with my boyfriend (we've been dating for more than a year). Anywho me and my boyfriend have had the "guy friends and girl friends" talk, and he told me that guys can't ever just be "friends", because they only ever really want to be friends with girls who they're attracted to, and wouldn't mind dating if the opportunity presented itself. Some part of me didn't want to believe him, but deep down I know it has some truth in it.

OKAY SO NOW FLASHFORWARD TO YESTERDAY, where I meet these two lovely individuals. One of them is this pakistani girl (also 16) who just wanted friends, but... I got a weird vibe and eventually told her that she really is just a stranger on the internet. She then said "no I'm straight dw", and I was like "that's not what I meant at all, I just don't know you as a person, and you could be a 40 year old predator in disguise 😭". THIS IS REASONABLE OF ME, NO?

Anwyho immedietely after I skipped her, the next person's thingy says "netherlands". So I'm like "OHMYGOSH I loveeeeeeee the netherlands. Amsterdam was beautiful" and then lalala turns out it's a 17 year old dude who also loves Amsterdam but unfortunately doesn't live in the urban areas. And lalala very casual conversation, very chill, and eventually we're telling jokes and whatnot. And this whole time I'm like, "woah, maybe I can prove my boyfriend wrong by having an actual normal friend who just happens to be a guy".

Anywho, 10 minutes pass and then he asks for my name, and I'm like "oh it's Valentina". And he says "you must be latina. That's a nice name", and I'm like... yes? So just in case I make sure to put it out there that I have a man, because I CAN'T TELL WHEN SOMEONE'S FLIRTING 😭

Anywho he's like "oh damn that's chill. We're just friends". And so I'm like oh phew, that was close. Anwyho more talking and then he starts to push me to pass him my digits, because it would be a shame to not talk again, and he had to go soon. And now I get a bit uncomfortable and I don't want to pass my number because idk this person and also isn't that like "oh here's my number, text me"/I'm giving you a greenlight?

So I say no, and he keeps pushing until I cave in because he said "if you don't trust me Valentina, you can literally just block me", AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS A VALID REASON, AND SOMEONE WHO'S INTERESTED IN YOU WOULDN'T SAY THAT, SO I DID AND I ALSO STRUGGLE WITH PEER PRESSURE 😭😭😭😭

Either way, after that he texts me and I immediately say "hey I don't feel comfortable, sorry" and block him. AND TELL MY BOYFRIEND. Because I feel all confused and shaken and my boyfriend comforted me and said it was fine and that he was glad I communicated it, and that I shouldn't go on omegle again.

But now I've lost faith in the fact that girls and guys can't ever be "just friends". IDK. advice?

Yes, they can. I feel that close childhood friends could have a platonic friendship, like I feel it's possible at least for me [I swear I could have a bath with my homegirl without getting horny], See you can't trust anyone you meet online especially on major platforms like omegle, instagram and tinder, it just is not safe, as for the Pakistani girl, IMM TELLING YOU THERE ARE AT LEAST 40-50 CASES ANNUALLY WHERE PAKISTANI PERVERTS HONEY TRAP OTHER NATION'S GIRLS WHILE PRETENDING TO BE SOMETHING ELSE there are even several movies about it, never trust anybody who claims to be Pakistani unless you know them in person, that country is infamous for deceit. No, boys & girls can be platonic friends, just friends, only the people and the circumstances should be appropriate for it.

I don't have an answer on your question. However, I would like to say something about other parts of your post. Giving your phone number to strangers is not a wise decision, especially if they pressure you to do that. Internet is full of predators, they are present here on this website as well. It's best to stay away from Omegle and other similar platforms. It's better to focus more on real life connections, Internet is just an extra when you are bored or you can't go outside for some reason although I have to say I've met some nice people online and I am grateful for that. The difference is that adults have more experience and can detect potential treats easier. I would also advise you and everybody else to remove their photos for privacy and security reasons. Predators are psychopats who are able to behave normally just to lure victims and they can do it for a long time, most of them are fully functional individuals who quite successfully hide their sick desires. When I say predators I am talking about pedophiles and scammers, they all can use your photo, phone number or any other personal information for various evil reasons. For example, I would never share my photo, name or any sensitive personal information publicly. If somebody whom you've met online wants to meet you in person, in most cases it's best to reject, especially when you are girl in teenager age. I'm not Rambo but I could probably knock out most of the people from this website because of my age and sex. Yet I would still think twice if somebody suggest to meet me in person and if I accept I would only accept to meet in public place in the area which is familiar to me. You should never do that because you are only 16. I'm not saying teenagers are stupid, I'm saying that teenagers are too young and too much hormone driven to be able to make a rational decision about this sensitive matter. It's not embarassing, we have all been there.

We should also spend more time offline, not only teenagers, all of us including me as well. You are 16, focus on school, sport, friends, family, hobbies,...

If somebody pressures you into anything, just walk away. You DO NOT have the obligation to agree on something you don't want or you aren't sure. It's better to be safe then sorry

Tbh im not sure because also depends on the persons maybe. For me at for example school and other places i normally dont talk lot with guys often bc i dont know what to say and feels super cringe and also if u talk with smb longer than others say really fast that u have a crush on him and i dont like if they keep making jokes abt it. So for me normally no and also i have now a nice friends group and we know each other really well and understand each other more and i think in same way is very difficult if is just like random guy from another class or maybe from outside school that u dont even know well.

I dont know ANYBODYY from my class that use Omegle and if u do that then i would ONLY do that with a friend so it feels not so super awkward and it is safer. And if anybody acts super weird then just BLOCK depending on what kind of app and DONTT doubt it bc u only feel guilty and that is not right. Also i would never give phone number to just stranger bc maybe u can block on apps BUTTTT he can still call u suddenly or add on something else unless u block him everywhere. With e-mail im normally fine bc that feels more far away but NOT mobile nr if u only talked on Omegle just one time. 😬😬🙄🙅‍♀️

And another tip is i had one time that felt really panicky i had hometown here mentioned and even though it is a city then still with all the other things on the forums then they can still find out super easily where u live like for example if u write abt u doing sports and in ur city there are only two or three places where u can do THAT sport then others can find it out really fast and maybe also with other posts if u write personal stuff that they search it with ur hometown so i deleted that. 😇😇

To answer the original question it is possible for girls and boys to be just friends.

However i would advice you to never go to omegle again and limit other social medias cause it seems like you have a habit of oversharing stuff. Giving your phone number to stranges is never okay espesially if your underage. And same with sharing photos of yourself online. Creeps can use a lot of stuff to do harm and you shoulndt risk it.

Finding a genuine friend in platforms such as Omegle is something like expecting to be given flowers in a boxing ring. Friendship knows no gender but manners.

Hi Valentina, that's a though question; but my answer may surprise you: yes, it's possibile. Some people, especially when they're lonely, may struggle to separate attraction from friendship; that's not just men, but people in general. I'm sure across your life you will have the occasion to meet every kind of person and learn that our individuality is stronger thank you think. There are many different types of relationships. Then, as Diogenes_cask rightly said, omegle is definitely not the place to test this theory. For what it's worth: i actually have some female friends, and i guarantee you i'm not attracted to them; i see nothing more friendship.

This happens a lot online. People tell you they are looking for a friend to just chat about daily stuff and interests. But then it turns out they were seeking something else! Such attitudes might be able to deceive you at first, but after some conversations with a couple of people, it will be easy to recognise "such people and their aim" from their very first sentences.

Being just friends with someone from the opposite is absolutely possible, EVEN if one is in love with another one! It all depents on one's level of maturity and humanity...

🌹

I do believe guys and girls an be friends. However, intention matters. Obviously that guy did not have good intentions. As is the case with a lot of people online unfortunately. I don’t even know what Omegle is, but I’m guessing it’s one of those random chat things. Best to be safe on the internet and not engage with that kind of person.

On to the actual question though, yes, I believe guys and girls can be friends, but it depends on the person. Some people, absolutely not. Flirty ones especially. They don’t have the personality type that allows cross gender friendships to simply be platonic. At the very least, it makes it extremely difficult for them to find platonic friendships because it will attract people who may be less interested in it. Some people have looser boundaries, and that can be problematic. Unless both people are on the exact same page, it won’t work. Maturity level also comes into play.

I have a very close female friend, one of my oldest friends actually. I do recognize that she is pretty, but I’ve never once thought of her in any way other than a friend. We’ve known each other for over 10 years now too. But we have good boundaries, so it’s never even been a subject we have needed to talk about in the first place, and I like that.

So in short, yes it’s possible, but not for everyone in my opinion.
