Assuming that you are right handed, your left hand must be your fretting hand. If you experience severe pains you may wish to consider the following possible causes and remedies:
- Beginners often apply too much tension in their fretting hand. Reduce the pressure in your fretting hand and limit downward pressure. This particularly applies to vibrato and string bends if you play electric guitar, but may also be limited to individual notes and chords. Remedy: reduce pressure until you hear string buzzes.
- It may be the case that you have a relatively small hand. If you play on a full scale guitar - as opposed to a 3/4 guitar - this may cause unnatural positions and overstretching. Similarly consider the types of strings used - including string gauge - i.e. thickness of the strings.
- Consider proper tutorials of a live instructor (not online) on how to position your hand. Certain exercises may assist to gradually improve strength and flexibility in your fretting hand.
Hopefully, any of these remedies will do the trick. Just post in this forum thread if any further queries arise.
