A school holiday which increasingly seems to enjoy a special status in my country of residence - The Netherlands - is a vacation of two weeks in April/May.

Families with a Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese or other ethnic background often use this time period to reunite with family abroad. Others enjoy the generally cheaper air fares than apply in the summer. For those staying at home: May camps are organized on an increasingly larger scale in a broad variety of sport and leisure activities.

It has resulted in an annual semi-exodus which may be typically Dutch. Or is this a phenomenon which is shared on a broader scale?

Any feedback or personal experiences are gratefully received!

Here in Italy we don't really have this kind of vacation during spring.

Students have some days off for Christmas, Easter but also 25th of April, 1st of May... And during summer they usually have 3 months off, from mid June until mid September.

We often see German tourists here and few Dutch lately.

Workers usually go on holiday in August although is not that common as it was a decade ago. We often say that "Ad agosto é tutto chiuso" (Everything is closed in August)

I remember that in Germany have the so called “Pfigsferien” in may, which starts in slightly different dates depending on the “Land” but usually schools remain closed for around 10 days or so. Should be some kind of religious festivities. But people take that as a chance to travel.

Many thanks to both commentators above. The general school holidays in The Netherlands are comprised of a summer vacation of 6 weeks and regular vacations of 1 or 2 weeks with a certain interval - often per 2 months. The underlying idea is that the learning curve is reactivated when regular breaks are planned instead of a lengthy 3 months summer break.

The pre-summer Dutch exodus particularly occurs during the winter holiday - anywhere with snow or sun being usual destinations - and increasingly in May as described above.

During our stay in Asia we have met many foreign tourists, but only few families from abroad.

I agree, 3 months vacation are too many and from January until the end of April they go to school non stop, some schools even on Saturdays.
