Do you have any cultural or religious traditions that you partake in on new year ?
My family just sends the day having a BBQ
hii @Killstar in my country people eat oliebollen and applebeignets and have dinner in the evening with friends or family!! i wrote yesterday about it in the Dutch forum: https://penpal-gate.net/forum/12-everyday-life-and-customs/9772-the-dutch-forum/latest?target=post_114478
but you can also read in English about it here:
- Oliebollen: https://expatshaarlem.nl/oliebollen-dutch-new_year/
- Appelbeignets: https://www.andy-cooks.com/blogs/recipes/appelbeignets#:~:text=Dutch%20appelbeignets%20(aka%20Dutch%20apple,deep-fried%20to%20golden%20perfection.
Can i ask a question to @Killstar and others who read this forum: is it a tradition that you have fireworks on New Year? And do people do it themselves or the city where you live? 🙄🙄
In my country in several cities it is now the first time that fireworks are not allowed anymore by persons themselves. But a lot of people buy illegal fireworks in Germany or Belgium that is more dangerous than in the Netherlands. And also in cities where it is not allowed, I think a lot of people will use fireworks anyway.
On the one hand it is better for the environment that there are no fireworks and also because there are many accidents or that they are used against the police or other people. But it is also a tradition and it happens anyway. My dad says the fireworks are NOTHING compared to Chinese celebration and likes it with others in my street. But i can understand both for and against fireworks the reasons.
