Every year between November and February, air pollution peaks in the city, which is located 1,400-1,800 meters above sea level, due to a phenomenon known as "thermal inversion," when cold air at high altitudes prevents warm, polluted air from escaping.
Air quality in Tehran was today rated "hazardous," with an AQI of 200, which is 10 times higher than the concentration of PM2.5 air pollutants considered acceptable by the World Health Organization. In the Iranian capital, banks and museums are closed, while the iconic Milad Tower (435 meters high) was no longer visible today.
